The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is an action-adventure game that appeared in 2023 as a creation of Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. Released as a sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom builds on the foundation laid by its predecessor, while introducing new elements and expanding the vast open world of Hyrule, allowing players to engage in more vertical exploration.
The protagonist, Link, embarks on a quest to locate Princess Zelda and thwart the evil plans of the Demon King, seeking to protect the world from destruction. The genesis of Tears of the Kingdom came about as ideas for downloadable content (DLC) for Breath of the Wild exceeded the scope originally envisioned.
Nintendo’s Entertainment Planning & Development (EPD) department led the game’s development, with Breath of the Wild director Hidemaro Fujibayashi and producer Eiji Aonuma reprising their roles.
The game was initially teased at E3 2019, followed by a full reveal at E3 2021. However, the release date was pushed back from the original 2022 plan to May 2023. Upon launch, Tears of the Kingdom received widespread acclaim, praise for its improvements, expanded open world, and emphasis on encouraging exploration and experimentation. It was an outstanding commercial success, with more than 10 million copies sold in the first three days of its release.

General updates
- By launching the game from certain articles published on a specific Switch News channel (accessed via the HOME menu), players can obtain a number of in-game items.
- Depending on gameplay progress or the location where the data is reopened, there may be cases where items cannot be received.
Additional fixes
- Fixed an issue where players could not progress beyond a certain point in the main quests “A Mystery in the Depths” and “Secret of the Ring Ruins”, the side adventures “Hateno Village Research Lab” and “Lurelin Village Restoration Project”, the quest in shrine “Coloring to find” and the side missions “Village attacked by pirates”, “Incomplete barn” and “Finding a pirate’s hideout”. Downloading the update will allow players to continue beyond that point.
- Fixed an issue that prevented fairies from spawning under certain conditions when they were originally supposed to spawn.
- Fixed an issue that prevented Kiana from Lurelin Village from changing meals under certain conditions.

Tears of the Kingdom retains the captivating open-world action-adventure gameplay of its predecessor, Breath of the Wild (2017). As players assume the role of Link, they embark on an exciting journey through the vast expanse of Hyrule, which has now been expanded into two new areas: the sky, adorned with numerous floating islands, and the Deeps, a mysterious underground kingdom.
In this vast landscape, players must scavenge for weapons, collect valuable resources, and undertake challenging missions to advance in the game. Link has the freedom to explore Hyrule on foot, traverse dangerous terrain by climbing, ride horses to quickly traverse the land, and glide gracefully using paragliders.
A notable addition to Tears of the Kingdom is the introduction of Zonai devices, versatile tools that offer various functionalities to aid players in combat, propulsion, and exploration, among other tasks. These devices enhance the gaming experience by providing new strategic options and ways to creatively solve problems. In a departure from the previous game, the traditional runes have been replaced with five new powers: Ultrahand, Fuse, Ascend, Recall and Autobuild.
The Ultrahand power allows players to interact with and manipulate different objects, allowing them to pick up and move objects of different sizes and fuse them together. This feature can be combined with Zonai devices, allowing players to create unique vehicles or structures. Fuse, another new power, allows Link to combine different materials, equipment, or items in the game world to improve the attributes and durability of his shield or weapon.
For example, by attaching an explosive item to an arrow, players can create an arrow that detonates on impact, dealing significant damage. Autobuild introduces a hands-on mechanic that instantly rebuilds a device previously built using Ultrahand. It automatically uses nearby devices and objects to rebuild the structure, even generating replacement parts if needed, albeit at the cost of zonaite, a precious resource.
Ascend, as the name suggests, allows Link to move vertically through solid surfaces, opening up new possibilities for exploration and traversal. Finally, Recall provides the ability to rewind the movement of objects, allowing players to correct mistakes or manipulate the environment to their advantage.
Returning with Breath of the Wild, players will encounter Shrines and Korok Seeds throughout their journey. Clearing the shrine rewards players with Light of Blessing. Collecting four of these lights allows Link to increase his maximum number of hearts by one or increase the size of his stamina wheel, improving his overall abilities. Korok Seeds, a famous collectible, can be traded to increase Link’s inventory, allowing him to carry more weapons, shields, and bows.
Within the Depths, a dangerous realm accessed through chasms on the surface, a new threat awaits: the viscous substance known as darkness. Whenever Link comes into contact with enemies cloaked in darkness or withstands their attacks, his maximum heart count is temporarily reduced by one. To restore his full health potential, Link must either return to the surface or seek out lightroots, large glowing plants found in the depths that fill his maximum hearts.

Zelda Tears of the Realm Plot
Set several years after the events of Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Realm reveals a fascinating story within the kingdom of Hyrule, marking the end of the Zelda timeline. The story revolves around Link and Zelda as they embark on a dangerous quest to explore a cave located beneath Hyrule Castle. Unbeknownst to them, the cave became a source of darkness, a poisonous substance responsible for spreading disease among the people of Hyrule.
Intrigued by the mysteries hidden within, Link and Zelda descend deeper into the cave, discovering a mural that chronicles the founding of Hyrule and the legendary conflict known as the War of the Seals. As they move on, their actions unwittingly awaken a sleeping mummy imbued with the power of darkness. The ensuing battle left Link’s right arm badly injured, the Master Sword shattered, and Hyrule Castle lifted into the mummy sky.
In a moment of despair, Zelda falls into the depths below, disappearing along with the mysterious artifact. Miraculously, Link is saved by a disembodied hand, which previously held the mummy. Waking up on the Great Sky Island, he discovers that his damaged arm has been replaced by a mystical prosthesis. Guided by the spirit of Rauru, Zonai, Link embarks on a tour of the Great Sky Island, guided by Rauru, the source of his newfound hand.
During his journey, Link encounters reports of a cataclysmic event known as the Upheaval, which has wreaked havoc across Hyrule. Determined to restore order, Link investigates the various anomalies plaguing the kingdom, joining forces with familiar allies along the way.
These include Sidon, the Zora prince turned king, Tulin, the skilled archer Rito and son of Link’s former ally Thebes, Yunobo, Goron, the president of the mining company YunoboCo, and Riju, the chief of the Gerudo tribe. These sages pass on secret stones, artifacts imbued with their own power, which Link and his allies wield to unlock new abilities and increase their strength.
However, their journey takes an unexpected turn when Zelda, who was presumed missing, is revealed to be an impostor serving the Demon King, Ganondorf. The impostor, known as Phantom Ganon, was quickly destroyed by Link and his companions.
Continuing his quest, Link encounters Mineru, another ancient sage who has managed to maintain a physical presence through spiritual projection. With Mineru’s guidance and the help of the Dragon Tears scattered across Hyrule, Link enters the secrets of Zelda’s destiny. It is revealed that the artifact that disappeared with Zelda sent her back in time to a long time ago.
There he meets Rauru, the first king of Hyrule, and Sonia, the first queen of the kingdom. In the past, Ganondorf killed Sonia, usurped her secret stone, and ascended to become the dreaded Demon King. In a desperate attempt to counter Ganondorf’s rise, Rauru appoints Zelda, Mineru, and the leaders of the Zora, Rito, Gorons, and Gerudo tribes as sages. Ultimately, Rauru sacrifices himself to seal Ganondorf’s power.
Zelda, now armed with the master sword, takes it upon herself to task the sages with helping Link in his future endeavors. To ensure the restoration of the Master Sword and its safe delivery to Link, Zelda swallows her secret stone, undergoing a transformation process known as draconia, in which she becomes a Light Dragon.
In the present timeline, Link cleanses the Great Deku Tree in the Korok Forest of darkness, freeing the sacred site from its corrupting influence. He then retrieves the restored master sword from the Light Dragon and descends beneath Hyrule Castle to confront Ganondorf. With the support of Sidon, Tulin, Yunobo, Riju and Mineru, Link engages in a climactic battle against hordes of monstrous opponents before finally facing Ganondorf himself.
Approaching defeat, Ganondorf consumes his secret stone, transforming into a terrifying Demon Dragon, and soars into the skies above Hyrule. Guided by the Light Dragon, Link uses the power of the Master Sword to shatter Ganondorf’s secret stone, ultimately leading to his death. With the help of the spirits of Rauru and Sonia, Link and Zelda return the Light Dragon to its original form, thus restoring Zelda to her human form and regenerating Link’s lost arm. As Rauru and Sonia disappear, Link and Zelda reunite on the surface below.
Afterwards, on the Great Sky Island, Mineru bids a fond farewell to Link and Zelda before leaving the physical realm. The sages vow to protect Hyrule, ensuring its continued prosperity and protecting it from future threats.
