Željko Ivanek was born in Ljubljana, NR Slovenia, FNR Yugoslavia, on August 15, 1957. He is currently 64 years old. He was raised by Fedro Ivanek and Vojka born Šimić.

His parents worked at Stanford, his father as a research assistant in the Department of Electrical Engineering, and his mother as a project manager. He is American by nationality, and is of Slovenian and Croatian origin.
