Zoo Miami recently expanded its animal family by one!
Last month, the Florida-based attraction welcomed a white-skinned saki monkey cub, the zoo announced in a press release.
Born to 13-year-old parents – mother Alejandra and father Macky – the baby monkey’s gender has not yet been confirmed.
Since the animal’s birth, the mother and newborn have been kept in a “secluded holding area,” according to the zoo, in an effort to allow them to “bond properly without any disturbance.”
This week, the baby was found to be in good health and was observed breastfeeding, according to the facility.

Recently, Alejandra and her newborn were given access to their habitat so that the baby monkey can get used to it.
“She is very protective of her cub, making it difficult to see it clearly as it lies on her chest covered in thick fur,” the zoo said.
In the future, the two monkeys will be seen in their habitat in the Flooded Forest Building in the zoo’s Amazon and Beyond Exhibit.

White-faced saki monkeys live in trees and can be found in the tropical forests of Venezuela, Guyana, French Guiana, Brazil and Suriname, according to the zoo.
The animals usually feed on fruits, seeds, nuts and invertebrates, the zoo added, and their main predators are large birds of prey, jaguars, ocelots and large rattlesnakes.
