Zookeeper mauled to death by lion in front of horrified guests after leaving the gate open at feeding time

A ZOO GUARD was mauled to death by a lion after he left the door open while feeding the beast in front of horrified guests.

Trained lion handler Babaji Daule, 35, was working at the Presidential Library Wildlife Park in Abeokuta, Nigeria, when the horrific attack took place.

The zoo said Babaji was showing guests a lion feeding routine late Saturday when “the lion inflicted serious fatal injuries on the man’s neck.”

Police spokesman Omolola Odutola told reporters in Nigeria: “The zookeeper, apparently feeling comfortable with the animal, left the safety gate open and continued to feed the animal.

– The animal tortured him and he died on the spot.

Ms Odutola explained that the killer animal was later put down by park staff “to prevent further mutilation of the body”, reports BBC News.

She said the zookeeper was pronounced dead around 7.40am on September 28.

His body was transferred to the mortuary at the Ijaye General Hospital, she told Daily Post Nigeria.

The management of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library Wildlife Park has expressed its condolences to Babaji’s family and stressed that the safety of staff, visitors and animals is their top priority.

The zoo is part of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, which was named after its owner who was the president of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007.
