1 Adult Killed, 4 Others Injured After Electrocution Accident in Florida Fountain

On Sunday, five people were transported to medical centers after an accident that electrocuted a fountain at the Jupiter Mall

One person is dead and four are injured after being electrocuted by a water fountain at Harborside Place Mall in Jupiter, Florida.

The Jupiter Police Department and Palm Beach County Fire Department responded to a call about a distressed child in the fountain around 3:30 p.m. Sunday, WPBF reported. Firefighters said bystanders tried to help the child before he was electrocuted in the water.

A total of eight people were examined for injuries, WPBF reported. Three people allegedly refused medical help, two adults were taken to nearby hospitals, and three children were taken to trauma centers.

The Jupiter Police Department said in a Facebook post that “five people were injured and transported to local hospitals.” Authorities confirmed that one of the adult victims was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

The other adult victim has been released from Jupiter Medical Center. Three children are still recovering in the St.

“When we got to the scene, the Jupiter Police Department and the civilians were treating the patients when we got there, so they got there very quickly, and the community and the Jupiter Police Department were involved as well, and that was a good thing,” Palm said Beach County Fire Rescue Capt. Tom Reyes reported to WPBF.

“This is a tragedy. Our focus is on the people involved and their families. We are asking the community to join us in praying for them,” Harborside Chief Executive Officer Nick Mastroianni said in a statement to WPTV.

“The incident did not occur in a splash area open to the public, but instead occurred in a restricted area of ​​the fountain, where climbing or swimming is prohibited,” a Harborside spokesperson told WPBF. Harborside Place was not available for comment when contacted by PEOPLE.

Florida Power and Light (FPL) shut off power in the area to help authorities investigate, ABC News reported.

Jupiter Police, the City of Jupiter Building Department, Harborside Place and Florida Power and Light personnel are now investigating the incident.

“We are aware of a serious incident that occurred at Jupiter late Sunday afternoon,” FPL said in a statement to PEOPLE. “Our crews responded quickly to ensure the scene was safe for first responders to access the area. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families involved.”
