1 Teen Girl Killed, 9 Victims Wounded During Shooting at Indianapolis Halloween Party

A mass shooting in Indianapolis early Sunday left one person dead and nine others injured, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) said.

The 16-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene, reports CBS News.

Nine wounded victims were between the ages of 16 and 22, and six were minors. The nine surviving victims were transported to local hospitals and are in stable condition.

IMPD Deputy Chief Kendale Adams said authorities have not identified the shooter. He said the group had “several hundred people” and that “six firearms” were found at the crime scene. The party happened at the after-hours hair salon — at 5100 E. 65th Street in Indianapolis, according to an IMPD news release.

Authorities received multiple calls about a large party after 12:00 p.m. Sunday. Upon arrival, officers heard “shots fired and saw a large crowd leaving the scene,” police said.

During a press conference on Monday, Northern District Commander IP Matt Thomas said police heard gunshots after they arrived to break up the party. He added that additional medical personnel had arrived to apply “emergency medical techniques” to the known victims.

Adams said authorities have identified the owner of the building and the “promoter” who invited partygoers to the event via Snapchat and the Cash app.

“Someone saw something. Someone recorded something with a cell phone. The media is getting stories about what happened and asking us things we don’t even know,” Adams said at the press conference. “That’s why I’m asking you to come forward with the information.”

“People have information that they don’t share,” Police Chief Randal Taylor said. “But until you cooperate until you help us, it’s going to be an uphill battle to try to solve these cases.”

Adams and Taylor also urged parents to be “very careful” about their children’s social media activity.

“This party is an unauthorized feature generated by Snapchat,” Adams said. Taylor said the unauthorized functions are illegal.

“The other thing is you have to be locked into where your kids are going,” Adams said. “You have to have some awareness of who they’re hanging out with, where they’re going and what their intentions are.”

The police also expressed their condolences to the family of the deceased. “We have a 16-year-old family that lost someone important to them,” Taylor said. “There’s no way we’re getting them back.”

“No one deserves to die at 16 for going to a party,” Adams said. “We as a law enforcement agency will do our best to do our part, but we need you to do your part.”

IPMD is investigating the incident with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Adams said Monday.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Detective Gregory Taylor of the IMPD Homicide Bureau at 317.327.3475 or email him at [email protected].
