From her weight loss journey to her messy divorce, the 36-year-old has been vocal about her struggles and how she’s working to overcome them.

Here are some of the challenges the reality star has faced since becoming a star.

ARREST

Slaton was arrested at the Tennessee Zoo on Sept. 2 and faces two counts of drug possession and two counts of child endangerment, according to the Crockett County Sheriff’s Department.

“The allegations and allegations made in this release are only allegations of criminal conduct and not evidence,” officials said. “The accused is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt and convicted in a process of law.”

DIVORCE

In 2023, Slaton went through a very public divorce from husband Michael Halterman.

The former couple eloped back in 2017 before tying the knot in 2019, which was previously documented on the TLC show. They are parents to sons Gage Deon (3) and Glenn Allen (2).

5th season 1000 lbs. Sisters showed a brief glimpse of Slaton’s failing marriage, including footage of her sobbing to her sisters as she said she was “at the point of breaking” and was taking care of her children and home alone.

“I’m very devastated, stressed, and Michael doesn’t work with—” she said. “Every aspect of my life is chaotic because I have no support.”

In March 2023, Halterman filed for divorce from Slaton after six years of marriage. He also requested a “civil restraining order” requiring them to stay 500 feet away from each other.

“There was no support. There was no love. There was no kindness. It was just psychological abuse,” Slaton told PEOPLE, noting that it took her time to speak out about the marital problems she was facing. “I just got tired of hiding from people.”

MENTAL HEALTH

After her tumultuous divorce, Slaton told PEOPLE that her mental health is “the worst it’s ever been.”

“And it didn’t just affect me, it affected Gage and Glenn as well,” she said. “So it was just rough.”

Slaton finally realized the seriousness of her mental health issues after a major confrontation between her and her sisters Amanda and Tammy during a trip to Florida last summer. “That’s not who I am,” she said of the conflict that was featured on the fifth season of the TLC reality show. “That’s not the person I want to be.”

That struggle prompted Slaton to seek help. “I said I’m not a therapy person — I said, ‘I’m never going to therapy,'” she said. “But I went to therapy. And I’m happier.”

She’s been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, depression and acute stress disorder, “which is like PTSD because of everything that’s going on with Michael,” she told PEOPLE. “It’s a relief to know I’m not crazy. It was something completely different. I don’t just shoot for the sake of shooting. I’m shooting because I’m bipolar.”

Slaton has since continued with therapy and medication for her conditions.

WEIGHT MANAGEMENT

Slaton admitted last year that due to mental health issues, she put her weight loss journey on hold. “You can’t lose weight without mental health,” she said.

Slaton’s top weight was 406 lbs. She qualified for bariatric surgery in 2019 and now weighs 230 lbs. During her journey, the reality star – who has diabetes – also previously struggled with pregnancy due to her weight.

After undergoing weight loss surgery, Slaton was not allowed to get pregnant for at least two years due to fears that she might regain the weight or harm her body. But only four months later 1000 lbs. Sisters star revealed that she was expecting, to her surprise.

Slaton struggled with dieting after welcoming both of her sons, which led to a harsh but honest conversation with her siblings about reversing the results of her surgery.

In December 2023, Slaton told PEOPLE that she is committed to being healthy enough to be around her children, and that raising her boys in a healthier environment than they were as children is a priority.

“I try to be there for them as much as possible,” she said.
