14-Year-Old Boy Discovers He Needs a Heart Transplant During a Family Vacation After Experiencing This Symptom (Exclusive)

In June 2024, 14-year-old Jaden Hartley was on a family vacation in Hawaii when he began to feel sick.

The teenager traveled from Chicago as part of the Make-A-Wish Foundation for his cousin, who has anemia of sickle cells. The first day, the family went on the ship and shaved the ice, but on the second day the teenager felt like he would throw himself away if he ate anything.

He later went to lie down to sleep in his hotel room, but he had problems with breathing.

“I couldn’t breathe regularly,” Jaden tells people. “My breathing was not straight. It wasn’t normal.”

He then sent a message to his mother, who asked if she wanted to go to the hospital. “I said no, I really didn’t want to ruin my journey,” he says.

Ultimately, Jaden’s mother, Abojnaena Grayer, a 35-year-old customer service manager, convinced her son to let her take her to the hospital. Later that evening, the doctors told the teenager that he had an extended heart and that he experienced heart failure. Doctors said Jaden would probably need a heart transplant.

“It was extremely scary,” Grayer recalls. She called Jaden’s father, who was at home in Chicago, and he immediately flew to Honolul.

“It was very unexpected,” says Jaden’s father Ja’shar Hartley (34). “Very shocking. Because he was an athlete. ”

June 7 – The day his family returned home from vacation – a teenager and his father were transferred to Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital from Chicago.

“He was so ill when he came in,” says pediatric cardiologist and head of pediatric cardiology at the Lurie Children’s Hospital, Dr. Stuart Berger, 71, says People.

Jaden was born with the heart forest. When he was about 7 years old, he had an surgery to repair the leaks in the heart valve, but his parents say he was an active, healthy teenager after the procedure – he even played basketball.

Jaden tells people that he began to notice that he was cheering when he climbed the stairs from the first floor of his high school on the third floor for teaching around May last year. “I was gas,” he says. “I thought I was in shape.”

He also noticed that often when he tried to eat, he would throw out. “I couldn’t keep my food long,” he says.

He mentioned his symptoms of his father, who called Jaden’s primary care doctor. But unfortunately, he failed to schedule a meeting for Jaden until he needed to return from Hawaii.

Dr. Berger says that Jaden’s diagnosis of enlarged heart myopathy could be associated with his heart condition as a child, but there is no direct connection. He explains that Jaden’s heart muscle was weak and the heart increases, not normally pumps.

Jaden spent about six weeks at the hospital before receiving Abbot Heartmate 3 LVAD Heart Pump, a helping device in the ventricular system, just a few days before celebrating his 15th birthday on June 30.

According to Dr. Berger, his device “really let him recover.” He adds: “Basically, it takes the place of the heart, it requires the function of the heart so that it works to pump.”

The device gave Jaden’s body the opportunity to heal, regain its strength and become healthier before having a heart transplant, the doctor explains.

During his extended hospital stay, Jaden received a special visit to NFL Star Damar Hamlin, who was in a unique position to understand what the teenager went through after he had a heart arrest in 2023.

“Somehow he experienced what I experienced,” Jaden explains. “He had a heart failure on the field in NFL. I feel like he was more terrible than mine.”

Hamlin, 26, is now an ambassador for Abbott’s Heartmates program, a community for people who have influenced cardio conditions for sharing and receiving support.

During his visit, the safety of Buffalo Bills took time to play video games with Jaden, and at the same time he offered him some tips.

“He said,” You just have to pray. You won’t be on this forever, you just have to keep hopes and not try to think about the bad side. Just go through it. You will go through it, “Jaden remembers.

Jaden was placed on the transplant list on September 13, and the new heart got 10 days later.

“So many things have become in place to really save his life,” says Dr. Berger. “I think that would be, Oh, say 20 years ago, these options would not exist and there would be the likelihood that his life would not be saved.”

Now a high school student has returned to school and a member of the Heartmates program, sharing his story to give hope and encouragement to others who experience heart failure.

“It was a rod, but I feel good,” Jaden says. “God has given me another opportunity in my life, so I just don’t want to take it for granted it.”
