Eric Wolfhard and Mary Jolivet have always supported Finn Wolfhard’s career in the entertainment industry
Finn Wolfhard inherited a love of the performing arts from his parents, Eric Wolfhard and Mary Jolivet.
Eric, who was once a signed screenwriter, exposed his son to great movies, while Jolivet showed Finn classic albums by bands like The Beatles. He was raised in Vancouver, Canada, where he Stranger Things the star picked up a guitar for the first time and started looking for independent acting gigs as a kid.
Finn’s parents supported him in his endeavors in the entertainment industry from the beginning, and they continue to support him today. Although Eric and Jolivet mostly stay out of the limelight, Finn tries to express his love for them and acknowledge them in interviews and on social media.
In June 2020, the actor shared a graduation photo on Instagram of him, his brother Nick Wolfhard, and their parents.
“Thank you to these people who kidnapped me at birth and raised me,” he joked in the caption. After listing other people who are also important to him, Finn emphasized, “Honestly, I couldn’t have done it without you.”

They share two sons

Eric and Jolivet are also the parents of Finn’s older brother Nick, who is also in the entertainment industry. They welcomed Nick in 1997 and Finn in 2002.
Nick is an animated voice actor and has starred in the Netflix series, The last children on Earth. The brothers actually worked together in 2013 when they both appeared in a short film, Repercussions — and have plans to collaborate again.
Both are set to star in an upcoming sci-fi animated series, New-Gen.

Eric and Jolivet raised their sons in Vancouver, Canada. During a December 2019 interview with Ryan Reynolds for Interview magazinethought Finn, “There’s no way I’d be the same person if I hadn’t grown up here in Vancouver.”
In 2020, he was waiting out the COVID-19 pandemic at his parents’ home in Vancouver. According to Guardthe ceilings are “wooden and painted, like the ceilings of a seaside cottage.”
Speaking to the paper in June 2020, Finn said he “had to learn how to be bored” for a while there.
Eric is an Indigenous rights researcher
Eric is a researcher of Aboriginal land claims, trans The New York Times. According to his LinkedIn profile, he co-founded VLW Research and is focused on “extractive, treaty and litigation research on Indigenous land and boundary issues in Canada and Africa.”
He explores territorial definition, indigenous ownership and rights, compensation for illegal land, and more.
“My dad was a lawyer and now he’s an Indigenous rights researcher, so there’s talk and awareness of Indigenous issues in our house all the time,” Finn shared with A coup d’état in April 2017
He explained: “There are members of Aboriginal communities in my schools who face challenges just being who they are.” The actor added that Eric helped run the school.
Along with his work as a lawyer and as a researcher, Eric shares his love of entertainment with his son. At one point he was a screenwriter and signed a contract for the Gersch agency in Los Angeles, per Guard.
They encouraged his love for music and acting

While talking to Guard in June 2020, Finn emphasized that he inherited his interests in music and film from his family. Jolivet used to be an artist, then she took on the role of “a great stay-at-home mom,” he said.
Finn also shared during an interview with NME in November 2021 that his father loved the original Ghost busters movie. Eric would “quote it all the time,” according to the actor who starred in the 2021 sequel. Ghostbusters: Afterlife and its continuation in 2024.
Finn added: “It was a big part of growing up. Being in a new one doesn’t feel real, I still haven’t figured it out.”
One year, Eric gave Finn a present John Cassavetes: Five films on The Criterion Collection for his birthday and Christmas. “They blew me away,” Finn said The Hollywood Reporter in January 2020.
He also recalled how both of his parents passed on their musical tastes, often playing classical albums in the car. Jolivet introduced Finn to The Beatles when he was 6 years old, per The New York Times.
He joked to the newspaper during an interview in September 2017 that the launch was “actually a bit late”. The following year he started playing bass and eventually started singing and playing guitar in the bands Calpurnia and The Aubreys.
They played a key role in his career
Finn started acting by finding freelance gigs on Craigslist when he was 9 years old. “I realize how sketchy it may sound,” he told za The New York Times in September 2017. A few years later, Eric hired an agent to help.
Nick opened up about his father’s role in Finn’s career during a September 2019 interview with Showbiz Cheat Sheet.
“There was a period when my brother Finn was working It and [the film], at the time, failed,” he recalled. “He was very angry about it and didn’t want to do acting anymore… My dad [and I] were like, ‘No, you have to keep going’.
Jolivet also encouraged Finn on his acting journey. In a May 2018 Instagram post, Finn shared an adorable throwback photo of himself as a toddler posing with his mother.
“Hey mom, thanks for letting me do my stand up acts when I was 7,” he wrote in the caption. “They really changed the game.”

Besides acting, Finn enjoys working behind the scenes. He wrote and directed Night shiftsa 2020 short comedy/horror film, and notably collaborated with Eric on the project.
“My dad, who has a legal background but is also a writer and is with me on all my sets, has also offered to help with the production,” Finn told The New Current 2020. “Actually, it’s not — I made it!”
The actor explained that Eric was instrumental in getting a visa for one of the stars Night shifts, Artoun Nazareth. (Nazareth is an American citizen, and the film was shot in Canada.)
Finn recalled: “My dad had to put together the claims and the business case and although it was successful, he admitted that until he saw Artoun go through customs at the airport the day before we shot, he was never sure if he would let him through. ”

During their conversation for Interview magazine in December 2019, Reynolds asked Finn how he dealt with fame at a young age, to which he explained that his parents always kept him grounded.
“First, I have great parents, a great family and people who support me and keep me in line,” he said. The actor added that he was “strangely disciplined” from an early age.
Finn is also open about how his parents respected him when he was a child. “I was raised in a household where children’s opinions were valued as much as adults’ opinions, and I think that was important to me,” he told CBC Radio in June 2019.
