17-Year-Old N.C. Girl Reported Missing Friday Is Found Dead. Police Say Her Boyfriend Reported Death

A North Carolina man who reported the death of his 17-year-old girlfriend missing has been arrested and charged in connection with the case, authorities said.

Joshua Biles, 20, was charged with criminal obstruction and concealing a death after Albemarle police say he called 911 around 4:30 a.m. Friday, May 10, to report the death of his girlfriend, Baylee Carver, and to dispose of her body using a red Honda Civic, according to local stations WSOC-TV, WBTV and WCNC-TV.

“[Biles] spent some time with SBI investigators as well as our detectives,” said Albemarle Police Chief Jason Bollhorst, according to WCNC. “There is some information that was included in the investigation that gave us detailed areas to search.”

Investigators from several law enforcement agencies spent the next four days searching the surrounding area for Baylee Carver’s remains, WBTV reported, citing police. It wasn’t until around 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 14 that authorities found remains that were confirmed to be Carver’s in Cabarrus County, according to the outlet. An autopsy is reportedly pending.

“Our deepest condolences to the loved ones of Baylee Carver. As they mourn their loss, our hearts go out to them at this difficult time,” Chief Bollhorst said, according to WBTV. “The Albemarle Police Department is grateful for all the assistance and resources provided during this search. The investigation is still ongoing.”

Unspecified court documents obtained by WCNC-TV state that Biles allegedly moved Carver’s body from his home to another location. Investigators also found evidence in the home that led them to believe the 17-year-old had “obvious wounds on his body indicative of unnatural death,” according to documents cited by the paper.

However, police said Biles did not admit to killing Carver, WSOC-TV reports. He reportedly remains in jail on $250,000 bail. It is not clear whether he entered a plea or hired a lawyer to speak on his behalf.

Meanwhile, Carver’s relatives are grieving the unexpected death of their loved one, including her father, Justin Carver, who pleaded for the public’s help during the search, according to WSOC-TV.

“I wish I could have done more,” he told the newspaper.

Bennie Carver, the victim’s grandfather, added: “It’s hard but I’m glad it’s over. Hunting and all. We prayed that justice would be served,” WSOC-TV reported.

Emily Lowery, Carver’s longtime friend, told WCNC she hoped for the best.

“I don’t think anyone wanted to think it was real,” she told the news outlet. “She is a very encouraging person. I’ve never heard her speak ill of anyone.”
