According to a press release from the Cottleville Fire Protection District, after the first fire crew responded to the scene, they entered a bedroom in the back of the home through a window, but were forced out due to “extreme heat and fire.” They tried a second time through a different window and faced similar conditions.

The county reported that additional fire crews arrived at the scene to battle the blaze, making it successful enough to remove the two children, who were pronounced dead at the scene despite efforts by EMS to resuscitate them.

According to the district, five people, including two children, were home at the time of the fire. The adult who survived suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene, according to KSDK. A police officer also received minor physical injuries, according to the press release.
