Twenty-nine people were trapped in a snowstorm at the famous British hotel Tan Hill Inn over the weekend.
Located about 65 miles north of Manchester in the Yorkshire Dales, the site is known as Britain’s highest pub at an elevation of 1,732 feet, according to their website. On Saturday, January 4, 23 guests and six members of staff took shelter in the pub amid a heavy snowstorm, reports the BBC.
There was a yellow warning for heavy snow on the night of January 4 and the pub reportedly received word that the main road would close at 10.30pm local time, according to The Guardian.

Despite not being able to leave, guests and staff were reportedly in good spirits during the snowstorm.
The pub’s manager, Nicole Hayes, told the BBC they were able to make the most of their time together “playing games, watching films, singing and dancing”.
“Right now, it’s like one big family here. We all exchanged numbers, life stories, we laughed, we cried, it was incredible,” she told the newspaper.

Hayes even had the chance to help one of the pub’s guests who had come from Australia build his first snowman, according to a post shared on Tan Hill Inn’s official Instagram account on Monday, January 6.
“As well as making my first snowman, I loved the big Yorkshire puddings and Tan Hill bitters. The staff was amazing. They work so hard. We offered to wash the dishes, but they didn’t have it,” said a guest named Paul about his headline experience.
Another Instagram Reel showed a thick layer of snow covering the grounds surrounding the inn, as well as all the cars in the facility. Hayes told the BBC she remembers seeing “six foot drifts of snow across the main road outside the pub” at one point.
PEOPLE received confirmation from the pub on the afternoon of Tuesday, January 7, local time, that roads were still closed and that the six people who were initially buried in the snow were still there.

This is not the first time that dozens of guests have been snowed in at the famous pub.
In November 2021, 61 people were reported to have called the Tan Hill Inn home three days after a storm brought three feet of snow that came close to the height of the pub’s windows. Heavy snowfall caused power outages and road closures around the property.
