Netflix is back with a true crime documentary called Bank Robbers: The Last Great Heist, which looks at the infamous 2006 Buenos Aires bank robbery. According to the documentary’s official synopsis on Netflix:
“Through candid interviews, the perpetrators of Argentina’s most notorious bank describe how – and why – the radical 2006 operation was carried out.”
A group of crooks robbed a bank in Buenos Aires, Argentina in January 2006 and took more than 20 people hostage. But there is more to the story. Let’s look at four important facts about the historic bank robbery in Buenos Aires before the release of the documentary on Wednesday.
Four key events in the Buenos Aires bank robbery, from planning to capture
1) Construction of the tunnel
According to Oxygen Media, the perpetrators planned the robbery of a bank in Buenos Aires for two years. The whole heist was planned by a guy named Fernando Araujo, who came up with a plan to dig a tunnel inside the bank. According to reports, the theft tunnel took a significant amount of planning and funding. According to Oxygen Media, the tunnel was constructed by Sebastián Garca Bolster.
2) Scheme to defraud the police.
According to Oxygen Media, some time before the crime, a guy named Julián Zalloecheverra was approached by his friend Beto de la Torre to join the famous gang of bank robbers, the Super Bandas. The goal was for the group to steal the Banco Rio branch in Argentina. The gang planned to trick the police by breaking into the bank through the main entrance and keeping people locked inside while other members entered a tunnel they had made to take money and other valuables from the bank safes.
3) Implementation
The gang carried out their plan, with some members entering with fake guns and holding individuals hostage to distract the police from the real robbery taking place in the basement. As reported by Oxygen Media, the group decided to commit the crime in two hours. The burglars left the tunnel after stealing money, jewelry and other valuables, while Julián Zalloecheverra waited outside with a car for the group to leave.
The team reportedly took about $20 million and left a message that says (via Oxygen):
“No guns or anger, it’s just money, not love,” says one.
Police launched an investigation into a bank robbery in Buenos Aires, but for weeks were unable to provide any credible leads.
4) Forfeiture
In a cruel twist of irony, Beto de la Torre was arrested with his girlfriend a month after the crime. According to GQ, Torre’s wife, who discovered Torre was cheating on her, told authorities about his involvement in a bank robbery in Buenos Aires. According to GQ, Torre’s wife identified numerous other members of the group. Authorities later arrested Araujo, Bolster, Luis Mario Vitette, Zalloecheverro and Beto. Two other people allegedly participated in the crime, but they were never prosecuted, and the police never returned the stolen money. Bank Robbers: The Last Great Heist will be available on Netflix on Wednesday, August 10, 2022.
