Deputies were called to the scene just before 10:30 a.m. Sunday after responding to a call made from a vehicle in the 1300 block of 130th Avenue, NBC news station Kare 11 reported.

Multiple media outlets reported that the four-year-old allegedly found a firearm in the back seat of the vehicle before shooting his younger sibling. When officers received the call about the incident, the driver was on his way to Fairmount to get medical attention for a young child.

In a news release shared by the sheriff’s office, authorities said deputies encountered the driver near the 1800 block of 120th Street where they attempted to render aid before the child was airlifted to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester.

MPR News added that the two-year-old was sitting in the back seat with an older child when they were hit.

Martin County Deputy Chief Corey Klanderud confirmed to KARE 11 that the person who called 911 was the children’s parent. Klanderud did not specify whether or not the loaded gun belonged to an adult.

As of Tuesday morning, the sheriff’s office had not received an update on the child’s condition. Will criminal charges come from the County State Attorney’s Office in Martin?
