5 Injured, Including 2 Children, After Car Crashes Into Emergency Room Lobby

The driver of a car that crashed into an emergency room in Austin, Texas on Tuesday night has died. Five others, including two children, were injured in the incident.

According to CNN, the accident happened around 5:30 PM in the lobby of the emergency room at St. David’s North Austin. The driver was extricated from the vehicle and administered CPR, but died at the scene, according to Peter DeYoung, the center’s chief medical officer.

No other information about the driver was available at this time.

Eyewitness video released by ABC News from the incident showed a lobby filled with smoke and debris with the sound of car engines still running and tires screeching. The child was seen being taken away from the scene while bystanders carried away the injured person.

“I heard screaming and many other noises,” eyewitness Steven Hughes told local affiliate KVUE anchor Daranesha Herron. “I looked down the hall and I saw a lot of smoke. I just went down to see what was going on. I didn’t know if it was an explosion or what. People just started pulling people away from the area. I could see a car had crashed into the emergency area .”

According to the latest data from Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services (ATCEMS), a total of six patients were eventually identified: one died at the scene, four were transported by ATCEMS, and one was treated by EMS at the scene.

“Of the patients transported by ATCEMS, 1 pediatric patient was transported to Dell Children’s with critical injuries, 1 adult and 1 pediatric patient with non-life-threatening injuries to Dell Children’s, and 1 adult to St. David’s Round Rock with serious, potentially life-threatening injuries,” according to the ATCEMS press release. An additional 8 patients not involved in the incident were transported by ATCEMS to “reduce pressure on the hospital as a result of the incident.”

“We are so thankful that the building itself appears to be in good shape and there has been no impact at all to operations outside of the emergency department,” a spokesperson told FOX 7 Austin.

“This incident does not appear to be an intentional act,” the Austin Police Department said in a Facebook post. Police said there is no danger to the public and the investigation is ongoing.
