8 Gogglebox stars who quit the show and why

Gogglebox is one of the most popular shows on TV thanks to its hilarious, straight-talking cast – but sadly we’ve seen several fan-favourite families leave the show since it started in 2013. Although some of them eventually returned, here’s why these stars canceled the show…

Stephen and Daniel Lustig-Webb

Earlier this week, Stephen and Daniel Lustig-wegg announced they were leaving Gogglebox. They wrote the heartfelt caption on Instagram: “After careful consideration, Daniel and I have decided that we will not be returning for a new series of Gogglebox. “We would both like to thank Channel 4 and Studio Lambert for allowing us to be a part of this amazing, funny and heartfelt show . We are also extremely grateful to the cast and crew, or the Gogglebox family as we call them and of course the fans, thank you for all your love and support over the years.”

The couple also shared a funny video alongside the statement to give a personal message to fans. “Hey guys, this is Daniel and Stephen!” They started.

“So we thought we’d put out this little video especially for the fans of the show to say thank you for all your love and support over the years. It really meant a lot and we just wanted to make this video to say thank you.

“And if you get withdrawal symptoms, we’re available on Netflix. Oh, and also come to the salon, come and get a haircut. It’s been an absolute ride; it’s been an absolute pleasure. But don’t forget, Channel 4 9 o’clock on Friday: Gogglebox!”

The couple’s departure marks the end of an era, especially for Stephen, who has starred in the show since its 2013 run.

Chris Butland-Steed

Chris left his on-screen partner Stephen Webb to continue without him on the show to pursue new opportunities in 2018. At the time, he tweeted: “I would like to announce that I have decided to leave Glasses case and I look forward to the exciting adventures ahead!

“A big thank you to @C4Gogglebox @Channel4 for the amazing experiences I’ve had and I wish the cast and crew all the best. A big thank you to the fans for their support! #watchthisspace.” Since Chris left the show (and married his husband Tony), Stephen has appeared with his mum and wife, Daniela, on the show.

The Michaels family

In 2015, Andrew, Carolyne and their children, Louis and Alex, left the show while Andrew was a UKIP candidate in the general election. At the time, a spokesperson said: “It is with great regret that the Michaels are no longer on the show. Unfortunately, any member of the Gogglebox cast who becomes a candidate for a political party will have to withdraw from their involvement in Glasses case. They’ve been great collaborators and we’re very grateful for everything they’ve given to the show.”

Andrew didn’t win a place, so the family eventually returned to the series but left for a second time after Andrew sadly passed away aged 61 in 2021. Speaking to the Daily Star, executive producer Victoria Ray said: “We lost Mary and Andy, and we lost Pete a little while ago. Their loved ones won’t be on the show right now. Understandably, they want their privacy.”

Marina Wingrove

Marina stopped appearing in the series following the sad death of her friend Mary, who starred alongside her in the St Monica Trust Retirement Village. Paying tribute to her late friend, she wrote: “My dearest friend Mary, precious memories will last forever. Our laughs and giggles and our ups and downs will be in my heart forever. Deepest condolences to Mary’s family. Love Marina.”

The Gilbey family

Pete, Linda and their son George became instant hits with their hilarious ways. However, the family left the show when George applied Celebrity Big Brother, only to return in 2016. However, it ended up being just Pete and Linda participating in the show, after George was given community service after assaulting his ex-girlfriend, and ended up being jailed for three months on charges of drunk driving. Unfortunately, Pete passed away in 2021, and Linda no longer appears in the series.

Sandy and Sandra

These two best friends had us all hysterical with their upbeat, comedic ways, but after Sandi left the show to pursue new opportunities, Sandra followed suit just a few months later. Speaking about her decision, Fr this morning, she said: “I’m going to miss him, but that’s when I decided I wanted to focus on other things. It’s been four and a half years now, and I’m just moving on, moving with the times.”

Tappers

Josh Tapper left the series after landing a job in the Cabinet Office – and his family followed soon after. Speaking with Mirror about leaving the show, he said: “I want to step away from that and the focus is now very much on my work. Of course, I miss that and sitting on the couch with the TV. But I’m more focused on my future. . . it’s a safer path. I don’t think any of the ministers recognize me, but civil servants do. It took them a while to mention it – about two days in total!” His sister Amy has since appeared on Celebs Go Dating.

Moffatt

The Moffatts have been a perennial fan favorite on the show, especially thanks to the star’s hysterical musings as Scarlett. However, as Scarlett rose to prominence in the television world and won I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, her family couldn’t stay on the show without her. Scarlett admitted she was “gutted” by the decision, replying to a fan on Instagram: “We’re devastated too, we thought my mum and dad (and little Ava) would still be doing it but we’d still be watching #Gogglebox. ”

Steph and Dom

Nothing was more hilarious than watching the famously posh Steph and Dom settle in to watch the show with a glass of wine in hand and a little sausage dog between them. The couple left the show back in 2016, saying Sun: “We think it’s important that everyone gets a chance to be on Gogglebox and have their say, and because we’ve been on it from the beginning, we felt we’d pretty much said everything we needed to say and we knew what we were going to say.” We still miss them!
