Brian Myers’ life was saved by the same dog he saved a few months ago. And their reunion after Myers was discharged from the hospital was even more emotional than when they first met.
Myers rescued her 6-year-old German Shepherd named Sadie after she turned herself in at the Ramapo-Bergen Animal Shelter in New Jersey. Shelter staff found it difficult to place Sadie because she was nervous around men and defensive.
“[She was] she was a bit nervous when she first arrived and wasn’t sure what was going on,” Heather Centrella, office manager at Ramapo-Bergen Animal Shelter, told us. “She became a bit withdrawn at the shelter, so we knew she would need an experienced home with someone patient.”
It took only 30 minutes for Myers to decide to take Sadie home after they met.
The problems she was supposed to have with men seemed to have disappeared. “She jumped into my car and we developed a strong relationship. I was able to address the issues she was having and am committed to giving her the home and love she deserves,” Myers wrote in a Facebook post.
Myers told the Washington Post: ‘She kept licking me and crying, so I put my right hand up to stroke her, then I grabbed her by the collar.
Little did Myers know that Sadie would be responsible for rescuing him months later. The couple were enjoying a normal night at home when Myers suddenly suffered a stroke. He could no longer feel on the left side and between the bed and the wall.
“It was really scary – I couldn’t get up and at the time I didn’t realize I was having a stroke,” Myers said. “My cell phone is on the closet about 15 feet away, but I can’t get it.”
Sadie jumps into action and licks her father’s face in an attempt to revive him.
The dog refused to leave him. She kept barking for help in the hope that the neighbors would hear her. Myers reached for her collar and was quite surprised at what happened next.
Then, Sadie pulled her father across the room with all her might to pull him closer to her phone. “She wasn’t trained to be a service dog, but she was devastated by what was going on and she could tell I was in trouble,” he said. “I don’t know how she did it, but she does.”
Myers was able to pick up his phone and call for help. Doctors at the hospital told Myers that Sadie might be responsible for saving his life.
Sadie stayed with the Myer family while her father was hospitalized and later in rehab. Centrella said: ‘They were doing FaceTime, he said she was a bit confused because she wanted to go see her dad and she was crying. “But he assured her that he would do everything he could to return home to her as soon as possible so they could reunite.”
When that day finally came, he was extremely happy.
Myers burst into tears as Sadie jumped into his arms and kissed his face. Myers said: “It was the best decision I ever made to adopt her. “I really feel like it’s meant to be.”
