A Killer Pilgrim Menaces Addison Rae and Patrick Dempsey in Trailer for Eli Roth’s ‘Thanksgiving’ Slasher

Addison Rae and Patrick Dempsey take on a holiday-themed villain in their new horror flick.

On Thursday, TriStar Pictures released the trailer for their upcoming film Thanksgiving, the long-awaited slasher film from director and actor Eli Roth. The film is based on a fake trailer Roth, 51, created in theaters during Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s 2007 double feature. Grindhouse.

The film’s trailer — the real one — features a man talking about the importance of Thanksgiving in American culture as the characters are shown in Plymouth, Massachusetts, where the holiday began in the 17th century. Dempsey, 57, is pictured in a sheriff’s uniform, just before a serial killer dressed as a pilgrim uses the restaurant’s freezer to carry out the gruesome murder.

The killer is then shown starting several more murders, while Rae, 22, makes a brief appearance during a scene where she is tied to a chair and gagged.

Soon after Grindhouse was released, Roth said Rolling stone that making the fake trailer was “the most fun I’ve ever had making anything,” as he explained the premise of the then-fake movie.

“My friend Jeff, who plays the Pilgrim Killer — we grew up in Massachusetts, we were big fans of slasher movies, and every November we waited for a slasher movie for Thanksgiving,” he said at the time. “We worked out the whole movie: A kid who’s in love with a turkey, and then his father kills her, and then he kills his family and goes to a mental institution and comes back and takes revenge on the town. I called Jeff and he said, ‘Dude, guess what, we don’t have to make a movie, we can just shoot the best parts.’ “

Roth confirmed to CinemaBlend back in 2010 that he intended to turn the trailer into a feature film. In 2016, he told fans in a Reddit Ask Me Anything thread that he wanted to “put some more work into making the movie live up to the trailer.”

The film, written by Roth and Jeff Rendell — the killer pilgrim from the fake trailer — will also star Milo Manheim, Jalen Thomas Brooks, Nell Verlaque, Rick Hoffman and Gina Gershon.

Thanksgiving will be released in theaters on November 17.
