A Timeline of Hayley Erbert’s Health Scare and Her Ongoing Recovery

Hayley Erbert is on the road to recovery.

Derek Hough announced in mid-December that his wife was hospitalized with a cranial hematoma and underwent an emergency craniectomy following a performance on their Symphony of Dance tour.

The Dancing with the stars The judge said in an Instagram post that Erbert “became disoriented and was taken to the hospital.” He revealed her diagnosis and informed his followers that she needed immediate medical attention, adding that she was “in a stable condition.”

An intracranial hematoma is a collection of blood inside the skull that puts pressure on the brain, according to the Mayo Clinic. It can be caused by a burst blood vessel in the brain or by trauma such as a crash, fall or accident.

Erbert’s intracranial hematoma was treated with a craniectomy, which is major brain surgery. According to the Cleveland Clinic, during the procedure, doctors remove part of the skull to address the hematoma; part of the skull is not replaced until enough progress has been made that the doctor can replace it later in a procedure known as cranioplasty.

December 7, 2023: Derek Hough reveals that Hayley Erbert has been hospitalized and has gone into emergency surgery

Hough revealed that his wife Erbert was hospitalized and rushed into emergency surgery on December 7, 2023. He announced on Instagram that she is being treated for a cranial hematoma — when blood collects in the skull — after experiencing symptoms while attending the couple’s Symphony of . Dance tour.

“At the end of last night’s tour in Washington, DC, my wife Hayley became disoriented and was taken to the hospital,” he wrote. “She was diagnosed with a cranial hematoma due to a ruptured blood vessel and required an emergency craniectomy. She is in a stable condition.”

“I want to thank the first responders and the medical staff who cared and continue to care for her. I am asking for your prayers and positivity during this time,” Hough added.

Julianne Hough re-shared her brother’s message on her Instagram Story, along with a heartfelt request from her fans. “Pray and send all your love, healing and light to Hayley and Derek 🙏,” Julianne wrote. “Thank you from the bottom of our family’s hearts!❤️”

Hough expressed his gratitude to everyone who sent well wishes to Erbert in another Instagram post on Dec. 8. “Words cannot describe how thankful and appreciative we are for the support and love you have given us,” Dancing with the stars the judge wrote in his update.

December 11, 2023: Alfonso Ribeiro asks followers to ‘please send your prayers’

Alfonso Ribeiro congratulated the couple and asked his followers to do the same. The DWTS The host posted a photo of the couple on Instagram on their wedding day, asking his followers to pray for them as Erbert recovers.

“Please send your prayers to @hayley.erbert and @derekhough and family,” Ribeiro wrote. “They mean everything to me and our family. Put love in your heart and send it to them.”

December 15, 2023: Derek Hough says Hayley Erbert will need a skull implant

About a week after Hough shared the news of Erbert’s “emergency craniectomy,” he posted another update on his Instagram, along with a photo of himself and Erbert walking together on the National Mall in Washington, DC, where the couple was on tour when Erbert experienced emergency medical assistance. In the video, Erbert wears a helmet to protect her skull where the craniectomy was performed.

“Her recovery process has been nothing short of a miracle,” he said DWTS the judge wrote. While “Hayley is fine,” he said, “she still has a way to go.”

Erbert will need another operation in the next few weeks, which will include a skull implant, the dancer explained. The skull implant will “replace the piece [of the skull] that was removed during the craniectomy,” he continued. “It will restore the skull to its natural shape and protect the brain from injury.”

He concluded the post by continuously thanking his followers who have supported them during these hardships. “We cannot express enough gratitude to each and every one of you for your unwavering support, messages, prayers, and undeniable loving energy that we have both felt during this time,” he wrote.

December 20, 2023: Derek Hough opens up about Hayley Erbert’s skull surgery

Hough said Erbert is going into surgery on the morning of Dec. 20 to “replace a large portion of her skull” that was removed during an emergency craniectomy. He posted the update on his Instagram Story.

“I firmly believe that all the prayers that have been sent with intention and love for Hayley’s recovery have helped so much. I can’t thank you all enough.”

The Dancing with the stars The judge continued: “Pray for her because I believe the collective energy has helped her through these few weeks. We love you, we thank you.”

21 December 2023: Derek Hough shares Hayley Erbert’s skull surgery was ‘successful’

A day after Erbert’s skull surgery, Hough posted an update on Instagram. “It is with immense relief, gratitude and immense joy that I want to share that Hayley’s cranioplasty surgery was successfully completed as planned,” he wrote.

“My sincere gratitude goes to the exceptional medical team. Their expertise and steady hands were key along the way, ensuring a smooth and successful surgery. Especially Dr. Mai who not only performed the surgery, but saved her life 2 weeks prior.”

“We are deeply touched by the outpouring of support and prayers from each of you. Your thoughts, prayers and positive energy have been a source of strength and comfort to us during this challenging time. It is truly touching to know how much love and care surrounds us.
