'A True Miracle': Pa. Animal Shelter Empty for 1st Time in Nearly 50 Years After Hundreds of Adoptions

This year, the shelter in Pennsylvania adopted 598 animals and reunited 125 strays with their owners

A shelter in Pennsylvania was overflowing with cats and dogs just two weeks ago. Today, all kennels are empty for the first time in 47 years.

The SPCA of Adams County, Pa., is “more excited” that the shelter is empty, especially during the holidays.

“Our community has stepped up once again! This is the first time in 47 YEARS that the Adams County SPCA has been empty, let alone at Christmas time, it’s a miracle,” the shelter wrote in a Facebook post.

The shelter credits its success to the hardworking staff and volunteers who “worked very hard to take care of the animals in our care and to make sure they were adopted into the right homes.” With their help, the shelter adopted 598 animals this year and reunited 125 strays with their owners.

As staff celebrate their achievement today, staff members are already preparing to return to work quickly.

“Next week we will be pulling animals from other shelters in PA in hopes of easing their stress a little,” the shelter said in a statement. “We’re going to enjoy this achievement right now!”

In other heartwarming pet news, across the country, a rescue dog turned to Santa for help finding a forever home.

In a video posted on TikTok earlier this month, a little bulldog named Grape attends a pet meet-and-greet at Century City Mall in Los Angeles with a sign on a stroller that reads, “Santa… All I want for Christmas is a home.”

Grape is currently up for adoption through Roadogs Rescue in Southern California, where he was transferred by an out-of-state rescue due to his complicated medical issues. The rescue spent about $20,000 on Grape’s medical care, including surgery on his palate to help him breathe and stem cell treatment for his joints.

Now that he’s medically stable and a “happy boy,” Grape is looking for someone to adopt him.

“He seems to enjoy grooming and making people laugh,” Nikki Carvey, founder of Roadogs Rescue, told PEOPLE. “One person who met him at the mall cried because they thought he was so cute.”
