Sister Wives’ Meri Denies Catfish Scandal Was ‘Defining,’ Even as Kody Is Still ‘Extremely Angry’ (Exclusive)

Meri Brown has long since moved on from the catfishing scandal that rocked her marriage — but not everyone.

Kody Brown admitted he is still “extremely angry” about the situation on Sunday Sister wives look back: how we started special. “The experience with Mary’s catfish makes me very angry,” he said eight years later. “Because she is in complete denial of what actually happened.”

According to Mera, “Everyone thought I was leaving my family, and I had an affair. And I didn’t.” It’s a point of contention for Kody to this day: “She had an online affair, which she now denies because she was the victim.”

Meri (52) and Kody (54) see the end of their marriage very differently. The owner of Lizzie’s Heritage Inn tells PEOPLE it wasn’t as “defining” as it seemed on the reality TV show.

“I’m going to clear something up here, and that’s what a lot of people really misunderstand, and that’s the fact that a lot of people look at catfishing as the defining moment of the downfall of our marriage or even our family,” she said. “And it really isn’t, because a lot happened years before.”

She added, “[Looking] at that point because the thing that broke up the marriage is very inaccurate.”

In 2015, Meri started an online relationship with someone she thought was a man – but it was actually a woman who cheated on her.

Meri told PEOPLE at the time: “During an emotional and vulnerable time earlier this year, I started talking to someone online who turned out not to be who he claimed to be. I’ve never met that person and I’m sorry that I got into this situation, but I hope that because of it I can help others who find themselves in similar circumstances.”

In previous seasons of the show, Kody said the catfishing scandal began to “tear apart” their marriage to the point where he eventually reduced his relationship with Meri to a platonic one.

At the end of 2022, Meri and Kody announced that they were separating after 33 years of marriage. Kody’s polygamous relationship with Janelle and Christine Brown also ended. He is still in a monogamous relationship with Robyn Brown.
