Profession
Adit became friends with Kevalya when he was nine years old. Both are from Mumbai and studied in the same school in Dubai. In May 2018, Aadit and Kaivalya founded a mobile app called GoPool to help parents find and arrange carpooling to schools in Dubai. GoPool App received a grant of AED 53,550 from Emirates NBD for professional development. Aadit revealed in an interview that he first came up with the idea of developing a ride-sharing app when he was 15 years old, when he got stuck in a traffic jam while picking up his younger brother Ishaan from school.
The project is rooted in sustainability, going green, reducing carbon footprint and reducing fossil fuel bills for Dubai parents as they prefer to use their own transport instead of school buses. From July 2019 to March 2020, he served as the project leader of PryvaSee, an artificial intelligence project that summarizes privacy policies. Thereafter, Aadit and Kaivalya entered Stanford University in the United States to study computer engineering. The duo moved back to Mumbai in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. While they were isolated from their families, they faced difficulties buying groceries online as they took 6-7 days to arrive. They identified a problem and launched the app KiranaKart in Mumbai in June 2020, a model for instant grocery delivery. However, since they couldn’t find strong product-market fit with the company, they shut down the business in March 2021 and launched Zepto. In April 2021, Aadit and Kaivalya founded online grocery store Zepto in Mumbai.
The idea of delivering groceries within 10 minutes took off during the coronavirus crisis, with the startup being valued at $200 million in just one month of operation. In 2021, the company partnered with 86 grocery businesses and delivered 1 million orders. The company’s valuation reached US$570 million within five months of listing. The app has received funding from investors including Y Combinator and Glade Brook Capital. Zepto is also backed by Nexus Venture, Global Founders and Silicon Valley angel investors Lachy Groom and Neeraj Arora. Despite being launched only in 2021, Zepto’s valuation crossed Rs 7,300 crore in 2022 amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The company went from non-existence to a multi-crore valuation in just a few months. Later, the business expanded to major cities such as Delhi, Chennai, Gurgaon, Bangalore, and Mumbai.
