Journalist Aakarshan Uppal attacked after covering drug-related cases for IBN24
In 2020, Aakarshan Uppal faced threats and physical attacks in Karnal soon after reporting a drug-related incident. Uppal discovered the individuals involved in the drug case after being contacted by an anonymous informant, the news channel reported.Whistleblower claims police have arrested at least three people Located in Rama Nagar, Shiva Colony, Karnal. One of the suspects, Gurmeet Singh, was arrested after the incident was reported in Uppal. Unfortunately, Singh died in custody two weeks after his arrest. After Singh’s death, Uppal and his family reportedly received threatening calls from the accused’s brother Gehru. Gallou held the journalist responsible for his brother’s arrest. Nonetheless, police later clarified that Uppal was only at the scene to report the incident and was not involved in Singh’s arrest. On December 7, 2020, Uppal was attacked with a lathe and sharp objects, causing serious injuries. The news channel condemned the incident on Facebook Live. Police later arrested five people involved in the attack. Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar visited this reporter at the hospital and ensured his and his family’s safety.
Akashan and two others arrested for allegedly disrupting Tessildar proceedings in Karnal
In May 2023, Aakarshan and Sumit Kumar were arrested by the Karnal Civil Line police for allegedly engaging in inappropriate behavior with a female tehsildar at a local tehsil premises. The detainees were identified as Aakarshan Uppal, who manages a YouTube channel, and Sumit Kumar, a resident of the city. According to the female tehsildar’s account to the authorities, Sumit went to her office to register the land but lacked complete documents. She instructed him to return with all necessary documents. Instead, Sumit contacted journalist Uppal, who along with a group of people entered her office and created a ruckus. She further accused them of misbehaving. The pair appeared in court and were later remanded in custody. A hearing on bail requests filed by their legal representatives will be held later. Both have been charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including Sections 186, 34, 342, 353, 354-B, 354, 506 and 509, and Sections 67, 67 (A) and 67 Information Technology Law. Following Uppal’s arrest, supporters from social and political groups gathered at the Civil Line police station in solidarity. They even organized a march to the office of the Inspector General of Police. Uppal’s family members requested permission to meet him and were assisted by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Headquarters) Mukesh Kumar. Uppal’s wife Monica claims he was unfairly arrested for drawing public attention. She said in an interview,
All legal provisions against him should be immediately revoked. He barely fulfilled his duties as a journalist. He simply brought the truth to the fore. People complained that their work was not done in the (tehsildar) office. He just does that as part of his duty. Last night he went for a walk and never came back. His cell phone was also turned off. We are not here to disrupt law and order. We are here only to protest against the wrong done to Akashan. He is a respected member of society. He always helped people in need. As part of his duty, he simply reveals the truth. His arrest merely suppresses the truth and punishes a man who has consistently questioned the authorities’ wrongdoing. ”
Akshan Uppal vs Bajaj Finance
In 2020, Akarshan Uppal went live on Facebook and shared a video in which he alleged fraudulent activities and schemes by Bajaj Finance Private Limited. Subsequently, Bajaj Finance initiated legal proceedings in the Punjab and Haryana High Court against Aakarshan Uppal and his IBN24 team members. Their petition seeks to stop them from disseminating, publishing or making statements on any social media platform that could mislead the public.
