The Leo singer was born in Sendhwa, Madhya Pradesh, India on July 31, 1991 (age 32; as of 2023). He inherited his interest in Hindustani classical music from his grandfather. He made his stage debut at the age of 5.
During his school days, he used to listen to music and when he heard the song “Mitwa” from the movie Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006), he was so affected that he sang it on all occasions and in all competitions this song.
Although he was supposed to be an engineer, his passion for music led him to join A.R. Rahman’s KM Music College in Chennai; which he considers to be the best decision of his life.
After working as a qawwali singer for a while, his fortunes changed when AR Rahman discovered his huge potential. In the year he debuted, he made an impact. These include songs such as “Moongil Thottam” from the Tamil film “Kadal” (2013) and “E Sanje Eke Jaruthide” from the Kannada film “RangiTaranga” (2015). He gained recognition in Bollywood after singing the song “Mere Naam Tu” for the film Zero (2018). The film starred Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma; it opened the doors of Bollywood for him.

Abhay has had an undying love for music since childhood. However, he did not let this affect his studies. He was educated in Sendhwa, Madhya Pradesh. He went to Chennai to pursue his bachelor’s degree in biotechnology from SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Kattankulathur. During his sophomore year in college, he realized he wasn’t cut out for this career. He then started taking part-time music courses at “KM Music Academy” in A.R. Rahman, Chennai; as a part-timer. While at the academy, he was a member of the Cavalli Band, which performed at private events. At that time, AR Rahman was looking for a new voice for a song in the Telugu film Kadal (2013). When Rahman saw him singing Qawwali, he asked him to do a voice test. Within a few days, Rahman’s duet song “Moongil Thottam”, sung with Harini, gave him a big break. The song became a hit and led to other opportunities for him.
