A former electronics engineer who later became a journalist and defied authority. Niranjan Takle is one of the few journalists in Modi’s India who is not afraid to tell the truth. His essay on Savarkar in The Week stunned the right with his meticulously researched argument against glorifying him.
Recently, his investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Judge Brijgopal Harkishan Loya sparked an investigation that reached the Supreme Court, revealing the many levels of conspiracy that allowed dangerous criminals to occupy positions of unlimited power.
Learn the story of journalist Niranjan Takle
The journalist who published the story about Judge Loya, Niranjan Takle, expressed his desire to study law in Class 4.
This was because the state government illegally acquired 16 acres of farm land from his family in 1971 to build low-cost housing complexes. Niranjan’s wish to get a bike was also delayed while the family awaited payment.
When Takle was a boy attending a municipal school in Nashik, Maharashtra, he spent part of the morning delivering newspapers. This is how he remembers those times, saying: “My father ran a small kiosk where magazines and newspapers were sold. I was dedicated to newspapers and magazines although I had no idea of their complexity or their consequences for society and politics. He used to shout out the biggest news at the bus stop to sell the paper while delivering it to our subscribers.
Takle did not expect to become an investigative journalist at such a young age. Let alone imagine publishing news that would make you a “political hot potato” and put you out of a job for months.
Niranjan Takle, 51, wrote “Family breaks silence: Shocking details emerge about death of judge who presided over Sohrabuddin trial” for The Caravan on November 20, 2017. The incident involved Brijgopal Harkishan Loya, a special judge of the Central Bureau of Investigations, who died while listening to the case of the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter in 2005.
Takle’s account raised troubling problems with the reported version of Loya’s death. Amit Shah, the national chairman of the Bharatiya Janata Party, was the main defendant in the 2005 lawsuit.
The next day, Takle published another article in The Caravan with the headline: “Late Justice Loya’s Sister: Chief Justice Mohit Shah Offered My Brother Rs 100 Million In Exchange For A Favorable Verdict In Sohrabuddin Case” . While the first paragraph described the circumstances that led to Loya’s death, the second paragraph explicitly described the pressure Loya was under as she listened to the Sohrabuddin case through the testimony of family members. She also highlighted the ways in which the 2012 Supreme Court order was violated and how the news cycle seemed orchestrated to keep the verdict, Shah’s acquittal in the 2005 case, out of the media spotlight.
