Abhijeet is an Indian playback singer and music composer. He has sung songs in more than 18 languages, including Bengali, Odia, Bhojpuri, Marathi and Gujarati. Abhijeet has a record of singing more than 6,000 songs in nearly 1,000 films.

Abhijeet was born as “Abhijeet Bhattacharya” on October 30, 1958 in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh (age 60 in 2018). His zodiac sign is Scorpio. He studied at Ramakrishna Mission High School, Kanpur and BNSD Inter College, Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. He received his bachelor’s degree from Christ Church College, Kanpur. After passing class 10 exams, Abhijeet started taking singing training from tutors RS Katiyar and Shankar Bordes. In 1981, he went to Mumbai to further his studies as a chartered accountant but decided to become a professional singer.

- He is best known for voicing Shah Rukh Khan in the 1990s and 2000s. After singing in the film Billu Barber (2009), he refused to sing for Shah Rukh again. The reason he gave was that he had sung songs in Shah Rukh’s films Main Hoon Na (2004) and Om Shanti Om (2007), in which all but the singer was blamed he.
- In 2015, an FIR was filed against Abhijit for molesting and abusing women. The incident took place at Lokhandwala Durga Puja Pandal where the victim was watching Kailash Kher’s live performance. She left her seat due to overcrowding. It was then that she felt she had been touched inappropriately by the singer. She was even threatened by the singer not to take any action. She eventually filed a case against Abhijeet under Sections 354 A (sexual harassment) 506 and 34 of the IPC.
- He made a controversial statement in support of Salman Khan’s hit-and-run case. Salman was sentenced to five years in prison. Abhijit, who supported Salman, tweeted: “Kutta rd pe soyega kutte ki maut marega, roads garib ke baap ki nahi hai I ws homles an year nvr slept on rd.” His harsh words followed. The comments were met with backlash.
- In 2015, famous Pakistani ghazal singer Ghulam Ali was banned from performing in India. Singers who support the ban say nation and patriotism are more important than music. He even labeled Ghulam Ali as a “dengue artist”.
- When the Uri attack happened, he lashed out at the Khan family – Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, calling them “shameless” for producing Pakistani actors. He even slammed filmmakers Karan Johar and Mahesh Bhatt for “nurturing and feeding” Pakistani actors.
- In 2016, he tweeted aggressively towards Karan Johar for casting Pakistani actor Fawad Khan in the film Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016) comments and became embroiled in a controversy. He even demanded that Fawad’s character be removed from the film entirely.
- He once caused outrage by posting offensive tweets against Jinan University student and activist Shehla Rashid. His tweet said, “Rumors say it took her two hours to get the money without satisfying the customer… causing a scene.”
- Another FIR accused Abhijeet of harassing a woman. According to the woman, she got into an argument with the singer over some drilling going on in the society. However, the singer claimed that the woman threatened him to get money from him. According to reports, the police booked Abhijit under sections 509 (words, gestures or conduct intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.
- In the ongoing murder case of Infosys technician Swati in Chennai, Abhijit said it was a case of “love jihad”. Rifat Jawaid, editor-in-chief of Janta Ka Reporter, sparked controversy after he opposed Abhijeet. Another journalist, Swati Chaturvedi, criticized Abhijit for giving a communal color to Swati’s murder case. To this, Abhijit responded to Swati and called her “Besharm Budhiya”. Later, Swati filed a police complaint against the singer for using abusive language against her. Later, Abhijit said that she wouldn’t mind if Abhijit said the same thing in English. He added that all those who attacked him were anti-nationals.
- In 2018, Abhijit was accused of sexually harassing a flight attendant at a bar amid the ongoing #MeToo movement. The singer has denied the accusation, saying fat and ugly girls are accusing men of harassment. He even laughed it off, saying he was famous and didn’t mind if someone used his name to gain popularity.

- Abhijit faced a lot of difficulties in his initial days in Bollywood. He left Bombay many times and came back to try his hand at singing.
- After years of struggle, Abhijit decided to return to his hometown Kanpur. But before that, he thought of showing his work to RD Burman one last time. He went to Boorman and asked him to take some time to listen to his tapes. RD Burman heard his tape and advised him not to go back. Later, RD Burman gave Abhijeet his first breakthrough.
