West Bengal School Services Recruitment Scam
Since November 2021, Justice Abhijit has issued a series of directions to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe alleged irregularities in the recruitment process of the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC). He issued several decisions against School Service Commission personnel, which created political turmoil in West Bengal and the Calcutta High Court. In a letter, Gangopadhyay sought the Chief Justice of India’s intervention in the decision of a Justice Ministry judge in a case involving alleged irregularities in the School Service Commission.
The Calcutta High Court Bar Association issued a resolution on April 13, 2022, calling for a boycott of the Gangopadhyay Court. In response to protests outside the court by the All India Trinamool Congress legal cell, the then governor Jagdeep Dhankhar sent a letter to the West Bengal chief minister on the matter. Gangopadhyay ordered former education minister Partha Chatterjee to appear before the CBI on May 18, 2022, to investigate the alleged teacher recruitment scam. In May 2022, he asked Minister of State for School Education Paresh Chandra Adhikary to appear before the inquiry. Reported to CBI for his alleged involvement in the illegal appointment of his daughter Ankita Adhikary. Justice Gangopadhyay had issued directions to the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) in September 2022 to replace illegally appointed school teachers with qualified applicants from the waiting list.
