In 2014, Abhishek’s father was posted to Fatehabad, Haryana, where he learned about a shooting range. Abhishek became interested in shooting from there. Later, he received shooting training at the Eklavya Shooting Academy in Gurgaon, Haryana. In an interview, he shared how he started filming. He said,
My father was a judge and he was transferred to a new district in Haryana every three years. One day I learned about a shooting range in Hisar. I joined there. After a few months, people started telling me that I could achieve great things in this sport, that I was a natural. This boosted my morale. I started taking shooting seriously. Later, we were transferred to Fatehabad. I still take the bus to Hisar every day to practice. My father suggested that I build a shooting range at home to save time on the road. But practicing at home is unsatisfactory. “
He then participated in the All India University Games and finished fifth. In an interview, he shared how he started taking filming seriously. He said,
First it was with rifles and then for a while I tried pistol shooting but had to stop midway due to semester exams. I started doing it again in 2015, but it’s still a hobby. It wasn’t until 2017 that I started taking it seriously. I’ve always wanted to try filming, but we didn’t have the platform. In 2014, while I was at the gym, I overheard two men talking about a new shooting range that was coming to Hisar. I got the address from them and that changed everything. “

In 2018, he participated in the Kerala Shooting National Championships and won his first silver medal at the national level. He subsequently competed in various national and international shooting championships, including the ISSF World Cup and the Olympics. Thanks to his hard work and extensive training, he is ranked first in the ISSF Men’s 10m Air Pistol category (as of 2021). Verma was selected to represent India in the men’s 10m air pistol event at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

- During the 2020 COVID-19 epidemic, he set up a small gym at home to stay healthy. He said in an interview,
I’ve been out twice – once to get my glasses repaired and another time to pick up gym equipment. I work out at home now. I like to practice 365 days a year, but now I can only do dry practice. When I returned home, I had planned to stay only for two or three days, but then the lockdown was announced and I was stuck here, but there was no other way around the situation. I can only hope that things normalize and I can go back and start practicing again. Of course, now that the Olympics have been postponed, things will be different. There is a certain amount of pressure when competing nationally, but the pressure increases exponentially when competing internationally. In that moment, it’s important to think about your shot and technique. You need to shut out the world. I always listen to my favorite music before a game and it works for me. When I shoot a bad series, I tell myself I’ve made a mistake and to stop it and keep using my technique. “

I train at least 5 days a week, 4 to 5 hours a day. It took me at least two hours to do this. Then I go to the gym in the evening. I train without a coach, but we always have a coach to help when needed. I recommend people just learn to shoot and shoot in groups and not always think about the score. “

I remember Saurabh had participated in a few junior tournaments before, but for me, this was my first time. Saurabh and I are good friends. We are all vegetarians.
