AN ACTOR who played an iconic children’s TV character has died aged 55 – as tributes pour in for the “versatile and talented artist”.
David Carling, who voiced Station Officer Steele in Fireman Sam, died on December 10.

A source confirmed: “David died earlier this month. It’s terrible news and very sad for everyone who knew him. He was a pleasure to work with and a true professional.”
In addition to Station Officer Steele, David also played Chief Fire Officer Boyce and Trevor Evans in the series, which he joined in 2008.
Among the wonderful tributes to David was a long statement from his agency, Just Voices Agency.
A spokesman wrote: “We are devastated to announce the tragic news that the wonderful David Carling passed away last Tuesday.
“He was a much loved father, husband, friend, actor and voice artist and will be greatly missed by all who knew and worked with him.”
Fundraising was launched nine days ago on Just Giving in David’s memory – on behalf of SOHO’s sound engineers.
It has already surpassed its £250 target, with £1,347 raised by 36 people so far.
It reads: “We are very saddened to hear of the loss of one of Soho’s great voice over artists, David Carling.
“Those who had the pleasure of working with and knowing David would all agree that he would light up a room with his smile and wonderful sense of humor.
“Fantastically versatile and talented artist, his voice was heard by many.
“On behalf of the Soho sound engineers and anyone else who would like to leave a donation please feel free to come here and add any message for David. We wish his family all the love we can through this difficult time.
“You give a little love and it all comes back to you, you know you will be remembered for the things you said and did.
“We will miss you love.”
Several people left messages for David on the fundraising page, with one writing: “Very sad news indeed. He was a lovely man and fun to work with.”
Another described David as “one of life’s truly lovely people”.
And a third wrote: “Truly a terrible shock. What a wonderful, wonderful man he was.”
