Adam Richman Spoke About His Near-Death Experience During The Michelin Event

Man v. Food’s Adam Richman talked about his 2018 near-death experience on the August 3 episode of the Celebrity Catch Up: Life After That Thing I Did podcast. During the 2018 Michelin event in Zurich, the 48-year-old realized something was wrong. Richman said on the show that he discovered a pimple-like growth in one of his mustache follicles. The actor and TV star later said that the illness caused his lips to swell to the size of a banana.

The Brooklyn native, best known as the host of various food challenge shows, including the Travel Channel’s Man vs. Food, said the problem was caused by a methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection.

Adam Richman’s Life-Threatening Illness 2018

According to the TV presenter, he contracted staph in 2018 in Zurich, Switzerland. Adam Richman shared more in his appearance on the Celebrity Catch Up: Life After That Thing I Did podcast:

“One of my whisker follicles looked like a pimple and didn’t stick properly.” I went to the doctor, and then my lip swelled up like a banana – it was ugly. I remember going to cut a piece of medical tape and I couldn’t reach my teeth.”

In order to solve the disease, Adam Richman underwent surgery and was given numerous antibiotics. He was apparently told at the time that the disease could develop intracranially and spread to his brain. Richman was told that the infection in his mustache follicle was in a zone known as the “triangle of risk” and could spread to his skull, a life-threatening condition. According to the foodie, Richman is still unsure of the cause of his MRSA illness. He stated:

“The doctor indicated that it could have been anything from a glass of water to a hotel towel, shaking someone’s hand, and then inevitably it was a glass of water” (touching my face). There are several possibilities.”

Rickman went on to explain how bad things would have been had he not fully recovered, saying:

“At the time, it never felt like ‘you’re going to die – it was never postulated, but it was always kind of known.’ They probably didn’t want to scare me.”

What exactly is an MRSA infection?

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), sometimes known as the MRSA superbug, is the bacteria that causes staph infection. They are extremely difficult to treat because the bacteria are very resistant and develop resistance to various drugs. If left untreated, MRSA infection can spread rapidly and cause sepsis. This can quickly escalate into a life-threatening situation, triggering the immune system and affecting other organs.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States:

“MRSA can affect anyone. Crowded activities or places, skin-to-skin contact, and shared equipment or supplies increase the risk. Some people who have MRSA can become infected with MRSA. Unbroken skin, such as scrapes or cuts, is a frequent site of MRSA infection.”
