Adam Sandler Jokes Being PEOPLE’s Sexiest Man Alive Would Be ‘Good for the World’ (Exclusive)

Adam Sandler has a solid reason why he should be named the sexiest man alive.

“It’s something that I think is good for the world,” the 57-year-old Saturday night live alum pranks PEOPLE.

The quip comes just days after the star of the new Netflix movie Space appeared at the People’s Choice Awards on Feb. 18 to accept the People’s Icon award — but pretended to think he was getting a PEOPLE magazine honor instead.

He blamed the mix-up on “miscommunication” between him and his agent and instead read from his SMA coronation speech.

“My name is Adam Sandler and I’m the sexiest man alive, can I have a hell of a yes?” He said.

“To the members of the PEOPLE Academy of Hotness and Sexiness, I would like to thank you for recognizing me as the man who made our entire country the hottest this year and was by far the most talked about person in the bedroom by couples or groups during fantastic roleplay and sloppy time, ” he continued. “Can I have another devil yes?”

Sandler then joked that he had been looking forward to becoming an SMA for years.

“I’m trying to be kind, PEOPLE Magazine, but I have to admit that three words are popping up in my head right now: ‘It’s about time!’ For decades, Adam Sandler has been patiently waiting on the sexy bench,” he said.

Sandler shows some skin in a new Netflix movie Space. He plays Jakub Prochazka, an astronaut on a long solo mission in space. Unhappy while alone at home on Earth, his pregnant wife Lenka (Carey Mulligan) decides to leave him.

As Jakub feels Lenka slipping away, he is visited by an alien spider named Hanus who goes to the spaceship and listens to Jakub talk about his relationship.

Hanus calls Jakub a “skinny man” throughout the film, but Sandler jokes that it’s not his favorite phrase.

“That was probably the worst thing I could see in the script,” he says. “A fat astronaut would be good. Chubby astronaut next time, please.”

One of Sandler’s stars in the film is his 15-year-old daughter Sunny, who has a brief cameo at the beginning of the film. Sandler and his wife Jackie are also parents to Sadie, 17. Both aspiring actresses have appeared with their dad in his previous films such as Hubie Halloween and You are not invited to my Bat Mitzvah.

Sandler tells PEOPLE that he and Jackie encourage them to watch his Space Three-time Oscar nominee costar Mulligan, for acting credits. “We say, ‘Well, watch out Carey,'” he says.

“I love Carey. Look, those are the things she does in the movie, there’s no way I could do that. There’s no way I could. I just look at her and go, ‘Well, that’s just the next level of acting,'” Sandler continues.

“I was just trying to make sure I wasn’t bothering Carey. She is amazing. It’s so real. It’s that simple,” he continues.

Sandler recalls being moved during one scene in which Lenka records a message to Jakub, explaining that she is leaving him.

“This scene — I wasn’t in it — but I was there that day and I watched Carey say goodbye. And my God, I couldn’t believe how amazing it was to watch and how deep it went,” he adds.

Space streams on Netflix on Friday, March 1.
