Career
- Teenager Adam Zampa immediately drew similarities to Shane Warne due to his boyish looks and similar movement. Adam Zampa rose to fame when he played for the Australian U-19 team in their World Cup winning campaign in 2010. Scouts and pundits immediately identified a fairly common motion, which involves throwing the ball over the eye line.
- Zampa made his first-class debut for New South Wales in the 2012–13 Sheffield Shield season after being awarded a national contract in 2012. The following season he moved to South Australia, where he has since excelled in the Sheffield Shield. He met Johan Botha, then captain of the South Australian team, after moving there and trained at the Australian Center of Excellence before joining the team in the summer.
- Zampa grabbed attention after scoring a hat-trick in the Matador BBQs One-Day Cup. Several T20 clubs expressed interest in his signature and he eventually joined the Melbourne Stars for the 2014/15 season. Zampa did not excel in Shield cricket but continued to shine in the shorter forms with his crafty bowling. However, his T20 stats, especially in the BBL, where his overall economy rate is a barely believable 7.19, effectively giving up a paltry 28 runs in a T20 match, is worrying.
- He was selected to represent Australia in ODIs and T20I matches and his performance was good enough to keep him in the squad for the 2016 World T20 in India. Despite Australia’s lackluster campaign, the selection of Zampa proved to be a wise choice as he finished the tournament with more wickets than any other Australian player. His stingy economy rate, which stood at 6.27 runs per over in the World T20 tournament, was once again the trademark of his bowling.
- The CPL and the Indian Premier League are just two of the T20 competitions where Zampa has continued to shine. The young bowler seems to have got used to the dry pitches in India as he posted the second best bowling figures in the Indian Premier League in 2016 when he took 6/19 against Sunrisers Hyderabad (albeit in a losing cause). He also performed well in the CPL, finishing the season with 15 winners.
- In early 2017, Zampa was unexpectedly left out of Australia’s T20I series against Sri Lanka due to skipper Aaron Finch’s “horses for courses” philosophy. Zampa returned in the third T20I to give his side a consolation win and top-scored with figures of 3/25. He previously described his disappointment as “a punch in the stomach”.
- Due to South Australia’s strong pace attack, it remains difficult for the wrist-spinner to stand out in first-class cricket, making Zampa a sideshow in the Shield game. He made his first notable contribution in the 2016–17 Sheffield Shield match against Queensland, taking 10 wickets on the spin-friendly Adelaide pitch. Due to his stellar performance with the white ball in the country and better level of potential control with the SG ball, the former Kiwi captain suggested him to play in the Test series in India in early 2017. But from Nathan Lyon and Steve O’Keefe, two-finger spinners, the selectors were preferred, Zampa was denied a trip to India.
- Despite years like 2016, when he had the highest ODI run total ever, Zampa’s brilliance was never in doubt. He was a skilled bowler with the ability to fool batsmen on and off the field. However, he was patient and put pressure on himself to develop his skills and repertoire.
- Zampa’s performance in the BBL at the start of the 2018/2019 season. he has been excellent but the 2019 tour of India has cemented his place in the team. It seemed as if Zampa had finally come into his own, and with the full support of management, he was able to start stringing together the winning games that secured his place at the World Cup. A hand spinner is always useful and Zampa has a bright future for Australia if given the right support.
- Adam Zampa got his chance to make an impression on the biggest platform for the first time at the 2019 World Cup, which was significantly later than the 2015 World Cup. The leggie will have a lot of responsibility as the first choice spinner in the team, especially with the flat English conditions that make Wrist spin a more reliable option for wickets. Zampa has developed significantly over the past 12 to 18 months and is eager to dispel any concerns about his suitability for Australia’s white-ball teams.
