Adorable Throwback Video Shows Tom Hanks and 5-Year-Old Haley Joel Osment Bonding Over Disney Cartoons

A video of Tom Hanks and 5-year-old Haley Joel Osment that recently went viral on social media shows an adorable chemistry Forrest Gump the actors had behind the scenes.

The clip, posted on TikTok account EpicScreenShots, captures a sweet moment from a screen test with Oscar winner Hanks and the young actor who will play his son in 1994. Forrest Gump.

Then 38-year-old Hanks sits next to tiny Osment against a gray background. Off screen, someone calls “action!” and instead of reading the lines, the two just start chatting.

“I don’t even know how old you are,” Hanks says. “How old are you?”

Osment replies that he is 5 years old and will be 6 on April 10th.

“So you had a birthday last April? What did you get? Do you have any chocolates?” Hanks asks.

Tragically, Osment says he didn’t get any chocolates for his 5th birthday.

Hanks then turns to Osment’s favorite cartoons, and the little star rattles off a list of shows from the 90s syndicated Disney Afternoon block, including Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers and Black-winged duck.

“Is Darwing Duck like Batman?” Hanks asks.

“Yeah,” says Osment. “Somehow.”

Hanks then amuses the 5-year-old by pointing out someone’s “old bony arm” off-camera and someone’s “ugly shirt,” while Osment giggles.

Another clip from the same YouTube test sees Osment reading a children’s book to Hanks. At one point, Hanks whispers, “What am I supposed to say?” and Osment whispers his sentence to him.

Forrest Gump marked Osment’s film debut, and the film received 13 Academy Award nominations, winning six, including one for Best Picture and Best Actor for Hanks (his second).

Osment went on to star opposite Bruce Willis The sixth senseearning a Golden Globe nomination for his performance as a boy who could “see dead people” in the 1999 blockbuster.
