Jason Momoa Talks ‘Singing and Dancing’ in Super Bowl Ad: ‘I’m Not Normally Hired for Comedy’ (Exclusive)

Jason Momoa recently added singing and dancing to his already impressive on-screen skills.

Momoa, 44, stars alongside Zach Braff and Donald Faison in T-Mobile’s 2024 Super Bowl ad, and the trio sat down with PEOPLE on set in Valencia, Calif., to talk about Aquaman the star’s musical debut.

Momoa stepped out of his comfort zone for the musical score, set to Irene Cara’s “What a Feeling” from the film Flashdance. “I’m singing for the first time, I’m dancing for the first time,” he says.

Momoa tells PEOPLE he first got the idea for the ad with a homemade “short film” that Faison, 49, and Braff, 48, produced on an iPhone from a pool in Miami with director Brian Klugman.

“It was well-crafted. I’ve never had a field like this and I was in awe looking at it because I was like, did these guys put this together? It was beautiful,” Momoa says.

Braff explains that he, Faison and Klugman were in Miami at the time for AdWeek and thought, “There’s no way they’re going to use us for the Super Bowl for the third year in a row” after starring in T-Mobile’s game-day spot in back-to-back years. “But we said, well, we should try, so we were in the pool and just started thinking.”

Momoa says he liked the “hilarious” sound, but his “first” thought was, “I can’t sing — they’ll have to find someone to sing. I’ve never sung on anything before!”

And it wasn’t the only first for Momoa, who says Braff and Faison “didn’t tell me to dance until” he arrived on set that day.

Former Peelings stars say Momoa did “such a good job” preparing for the challenge on set. “He joins the party perfectly because we come in here and act like goofs, and Jason does a great job of being funny with us,” Braff says.

Momoa says Braff and Faison have been “so supportive” on set, and the comedy duo is thrilled to have the movie star alongside them in the T-Mobile Home Internet ad.

“It’s like coming into the family,” Momoa says of working with Braff and Faison. “You can see them at shows and you feel like you know them. And then when you meet them, you hope they’re not going to be…holes, and they’re not! They’re beautiful and they’re so supportive.”

Faison says Momoa was “instantly on board” to do whatever was asked of him on set, including dousing himself with water. “We immediately started joking with the first rehearsal that we were knocking on doors,” Faison shares.

“He just jumped right into it,” Braff says.

“I mean, that’s the thing,” Momoa begins. “I don’t normally get hired for comedy, so I love being able to come and do stuff like this.”

And his actors in the Super Bowl ad predict that Momo’s appearance in the spot could mean more comedic roles in the movie star’s future.

“GUYS, you have an exclusive here,” jokes Braff, “Jason Momoa will be doing more comedies for years to come.”

Super Bowl LVIII begins on February 11 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
