In 2010, she was threatened and attacked by her brother and father for having a relationship with an Indian boy. On June 29, 2010, they appeared at Manchester Magistrates’ Court for threatening to kill Afshan Azad. Afshan’s brother was later charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and was sentenced to six months in prison on January 21, 2011. The judge in charge of the case, Roger Thomas QC, delivered his verdict, saying:
“The attack was sustained and accompanied by severe and very hurtful abuse and threats. This must have been a traumatic and frightening experience for your sister, who believes it lasted for approximately three hours. The context of this offending was the concerns you and other family members had about Afshan’s relationship with a young man who was not of the Islamic faith.”
He further added,
“This sentence is designed to punish you for what you did, but also to send a clear message to others that domestic violence of the kind that occurs here will not be tolerated. Miss Azad was on the phone in her bedroom when her brother overheard her in the bathroom and thought she was talking to her Hindu boyfriend,” the court heard.
