Afzal Ansari is an Indian politician and a member of the People’s Socialist Party. He is the Member of Parliament (MP) from Ghazipur constituency in Uttar Pradesh, India, and served five times as the MLA from Mohammadabad in Uttar Pradesh. Mukhtar Ansari is his younger brother. April 2023 Afzal Ansari and Mukhtar Ansari kidnapping of VHP worker Nandkishore Rungta in 1996 and murder of BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai in 2005 He made headlines after being convicted.

Afzal Ansari was born on Friday, 14 August 1953, in Yusufpur, Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh (age 70; as of 2023). His zodiac sign is Leo. He grew up in Yusufpur, Ghazipur district of Uttar Pradesh, where he attended a local school and completed his 10th and 12th class in 1969 and 1971 respectively. After completing his studies, he attended Post Graduate College in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree. In 1976 he received his Master of Arts degree from the same institute. During his graduation, he joined the college’s student union.

His maternal grandfather, Brigadier General Usman Ansari, was an Indian Army officer and was awarded the Mahavir Chakra, India’s second highest military medal. He is also known as the “Lion of Nowshera” because of his key role in defending the Kashmiri town of Nowshera from Pakistani attackers during the 1947-48 Indo-Pak war. He was killed during the war. Afzal Ansari started his political career in 1985 when he contested the UP Vidhan Sabha elections from Mohammadabad constituency on the ticket of the Communist Party of India (CPI). He won the election with a total of 29,816 votes. Afzal said in an interview that he initially went to meet Chaudhary Charan Singh and Mulayam Singh Yadav to get a Zhang contested the ticket for the 1985 Assembly elections; however, his request was rejected and he contested the elections on behalf of the Communist Party of India. In 1989, he contested the UP Legislative Assembly elections from Mohammadabad constituency on the CPI ticket; he won the election by 39,588 votes. Afzal Ansari contested the 1991 and 1993 UP Vidhan Sabha elections on behalf of the Communist Party of India (CPI) and won from Mohammadabad constituency. In 1996, Afzal Ansari left the Communist Party of India and became a member of the Samajwadi Party (SP). In the same year, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly from Mohammadabad constituency. Afzal served as a member of the Estimates Committee from 1997 to 1998. In 2002, he contested the UP Legislative Assembly polls on an SP ticket from Mohammadabad constituency; however, he lost to Krishnanand Rai of the BJP.

In 2004, he contested the Lok Sabha elections from Ghazipur constituency on behalf of the Samajwadi Party and won. He received a total of 74,015 votes in the election. In the same year, he was appointed as a member of the Chemical Fertilizer Committee, the Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Railways, the Central Hajj Committee, and the Chemical Fertilizer Committee. In 2007, he quit the Socialist Party and joined the People’s Socialist Party (BSP). However, Afzal and his brother Mukhtar were expelled from the party in 2010 after Mayawati discovered Mukhtar’s involvement in criminal activities.
