Airline Apologizes After Playing R-Rated Dakota Johnson Movie for Entire Plane

All passengers on a recent flight from Sydney to Tokyo were accidentally shown an R-rated film.

The incident occurred on Qantas flight QF59 due to a technical issue with the in-flight entertainment system, according to a Reddit user who was a passenger on the October 5 flight.

“After an hour’s delay, the pilot still decided to take off, but the only option left was for the crew to play a movie on every screen – and it was impossible to pause, dim or turn it off,” the user shared.

However, the flyer said that it was “because” the selected film was from 2023 dad, which they described as “grossly inappropriate” for a wider audience.

“It contained graphic nudity and a lot of sexting – the kind where you could literally read the text on the screen without the need for headphones,” they wrote, explaining that it took “almost an hour” to switch the screens to the child-friendly clip and that the incident was ” super uncomfortable for families with children on board.

Daddio stars as Dakota Johnson as a woman returning to Manhattan after a road trip, who talks to her cab driver (Sean Penn) about various topics, such as sex and relationships.

According to the MPAA, the film is rated R for “language throughout, sexual material and brief graphic nudity.”

Qantas later apologized for the error, pointing out that the film was selected based on requests from some passengers.

“The film was clearly not suitable for playback throughout the flight and we sincerely apologize to customers for this experience,” a spokesperson for the Australian airline said in a statement to PEOPLE.

“All screens have been changed to a family-friendly movie for the rest of the flight, which is our standard practice for the rare occasions when individual movie selection is not possible,” the statement added. “We are checking how the movie was selected.”

Another Reddit user, who said they were on the same flight, described part of the film shown as 40 minutes of “penis and tits”. They said after-flight entertainment was included Inside Out 2, followed by a New Zealand nature show.

“There was a child next to me and he had to throw a pamphlet at the screen because his mom went to the toilet,” they added. “These poor children and parents, because everyone should have heard an audible gasp throughout the plane.”
