Ajay Alok is an Indian doctor and politician who has served as the official spokesperson of the JDU and the BJP. He is the founder of Indira Gopal Institute of Medical Services (IGIMS), Patna. He is known for his oratory skills and for debating political opponents in televised debates.

Dr. Ajay Alok was born in 1985 in Patna, Bihar, India (age 48 in 2023). He studied up to Class 8th at Loyola High School, Patna and later passed Class 10th in 1989 and passed Class 12th in 1991 from CSKM Public School, New Delhi. From 1993 to 1997, he studied Bachelor of Medicine in Internal Medicine at Dr. DY Patil Educational Association Medical College, affiliated with Shivaji University, Kolhapur, Maharashtra. He worked in Delhi and abroad before returning to Bihar in 1999. Later, he passed the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) examination to serve as a government doctor. He established the Indira Gopal Institute of Medical Services (IGIMS) in 2000 and opened Udayan Hospital in Patna in 2013.

Get involved in politics
In March 2003, a gangster named Bindu Singh demanded a ransom of 2.5 million rupees from him and his father and threatened to kill them if they did not give him the money. He also told them that he had killed a doctor in Kadam Kuan, Patna, but the doctor did not give him ransom. When Alok sought help from gangster-turned-politician Suraj Bhan Singh, Singh told him that he should enter politics to clean up the system as the gangsters were protected by politicians. This idea inspired Ajay, who was active in student politics, to enter politics in 2003.

In 2003, a political party in his hometown Chainpur denied him a political ticket on caste grounds. In the 2005 Bihar Assembly elections, he contested from the Chainpur assembly seat on the ticket of Ram Vilas Paswan’s party Janata Dal (LJP); however, he finished fourth , received 9683 votes. In the 2010 Bihar Assembly elections, he once again contested for the Chainpur Assembly seat on behalf of Mayawati-led Samajwadi Party (BSP); however, he came second with 32,930 votes.
Contact with JDU
After struggling to find political strength among different political parties, he joined Nitish Kumar-led Joint Democratic Party (JDU) in 2012 and became the party’s general secretary and official spokesperson. He is known for his oratory skills as he often speaks out about the party’s views in English and Hindi television debates. His stance on partisan views was not shared by many party leaders, and he faced criticism from across the aisle. He wrote to the then party chairman on June 13, 2019, resigning as spokesman. On June 14, 2022, he was expelled from JDU by the then party president Umesh Singh Kushwaha for his anti-party activities.
Join the Bharatiya Janata Party
Ajay Alok attended a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) event in Delhi on April 28, 2023, where Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw was also present as the official spokesperson of the party. Addressing the media at the ceremony, he said he felt like he was joining his family. He said,

Go against JDU’s position
In November 2016, Ajay Alok was sacked as JDU official spokesperson after he asked the Narendra Modi-led NDA government to release the video of the 2016 surgical strike position. He was later reinstated; however, in 2022, he was found guilty of speaking out against Mamata Banerjee’s West Bengal government and Indian Home Minister Amit Shah on the issue of Rohingya infiltration from Bangladesh. And was once again dismissed as official spokesperson. He also made remarks against Prashant Kishor during his tenure as JDU spokesperson, which was not welcomed by Nitish Kumar.
Facts/Trivia
- On the night of February 19, 2013, his maid Mani stole jewelery worth Rs 50 lakh, cash of Rs 12 lakh, six passports and six bank locker keys from his wife’s house. Police later arrested Mani and her boyfriend Mohammad Amjad Khan and recovered the stolen items from their possession.
- His father Gopal Prasad Sinha contested against Shatrughan Sinha in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Patna Sahib constituency; however, he failed to win.
- He criticized the Nitish Kumar government after water entered his home during floods in Patna in September 2019.
- In July 2020, his wife and two children contracted Covid-19, and he subsequently self-isolated at home. His family later recovered when tests showed they no longer had the virus.
- In April 2022, a road in Shrikrishanapuri, Patna, was named after his mother, renowned educationist Indira Sinha.
