Ajmal Ameer started his career as a model and later entered the film industry. His first film was “February 14” (2005), where he played a relatively uncredited role. In his debut film Pranayakalam (2007), he played a young man named Renjith who becomes romantically involved with actor Vimala Raman’s character.
He next appeared in the Tamil film Anjathe (2008) directed by Mysskin. His performance as Kripakaran won him the 56th Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor and many other awards.
In the same year, Ajmal played the role of Mohanlal’s rebellious brother in the Malayalam film Madampi (2008). His role as Ramakrishna Pillai was well received by the audience.
His subsequent Tamil films TN 07 AL 4777 (2009) and Thiru Thiru Thiru Thiru (2009) performed well commercially. His next Malayalam film De Nova (2010) did not do well at the box office. His performance as Vasanthan Perumal, a politician in many shades of gray, in the Tamil film Ko (2011) earned him many awards and critical acclaim.
His first film in the Telugu film industry, Racha (2012), was a success. From the beginning of his career, he has been a part of Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam industries. His films include the Malayalam suspense thriller Bangla (2013), Karupapati (2014) and the Tamil version of Vetri Selvan (2014) It performed poorly due to a number of reasons including lack of publicity.
In Malayalam, he appeared in small roles in the films Loham (2014) and Two Countries (2015). Both characters were recognized by the audience. He guest-starred as a priest in the award-winning Malayalam film Ben (2015). He achieved commercial success playing the villainous role of Dr. James Dinah in Vignesh Shivan’s Tamil crime thriller Netrikann (2021). The film features Nayanthara in the lead role as a blind man.
He is back in the Mollywood industry with films like Kshanam (2022), Pathaam Valavu (2022), Paappan (2022), Gold (2022) and Abhyuham (2023) . His bilingual film Second Show (2022) was released in Tamil and Sinhala. Ajmal Ameer plays the role of IPS officer and district commissioner Adithya in the movie Theerkadarishi (2023).
