Profession
During his first few years in the United States, Khan played for local clubs, but professional cricket was still a distant dream for him. Khan got his first breakthrough in 2015 when he made the trials and was selected in the 15-man squad of the ICC Americas (a joint team of players from all regions of the Americas) for the 2016 NAGICO Regional Super50 tournament in the West Indies. Khan began his professional cricket career in January 2016, playing for the ICC Americas against Jamaica. Impressed by his outstanding skills, he signed with the Guyana Amazon Warriors to play in the 2016 Caribbean Premier League (CPL). He made his debut in the CPL and defeated Sri Lankan legendary cricketer Kumar Sangakkara with his first ball. As a result, he was included in the US team selection camp for the 2016 ICC World Cricket League Division 4 tournament in October. However, he then suffered a hamstring injury in training and his career suffered a major setback. The injury kept him out of action for 8-10 months. He was unable to play for the United States in the 2016 ICC World Cricket League Division 4 tournament and lost his contract with Guyana Amazon Warriors for the 2017 CPL. After recovering from the injury, he made a strong comeback in the 2018 US Open T20 tournament in Florida. He then got the chance to play for the Winnipeg Hawks in the 2018 Global T20 League in Canada. That same year, he returned to the CPL by signing with Shah Rukh Khan’s Trinidad Knight Riders. Ali took 16 wickets in the tournament and his excellent bowling played a major role in TKR’s success as they won the 2018 CPL title.
Ali has since played in several other cricket leagues around the world, including the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and the Bangladesh Super League (BSL). Wherever he plays, he leaves behind a string of impactful deliveries. After showing his magic in various T20 cricket leagues around the world, Ali finally made his international debut for the national team, the United States, in April 2019. He took five wickets in his first match against Papua New Guinea, helping his team seal the victory, which also helped the American cricket team secure their much-awaited ODI qualification.
In September 2020, Ali Khan was selected in the KKR squad for Dream11 IPL 2020 as a replacement for England fast bowler Harry Gurney who withdrew from IPL 2020 due to a shoulder injury.
