Ali Larter Reveals Why She Left L.A. for the ‘Quiet Grandness’ of Idaho with Husband Hayes MacArthur

But Larter built her dream home away from the lights of Hollywood.

Despite always living in big cities, the actress — whose new series is Paramount+ Landman premiering in November — unexpectedly found her home in the small town of Sun Valley, Idaho, with her husband Hayes MacArthur and their two children.

“We fell in love with the beauty of the mountains and their quiet majesty,” explains Larter in the cover story for the new issue of Rue magazine. “None of us have ever lived in a small town before,” says the Legal blonde and College blues alum. “People look out for each other. There’s a real sense of community here and we’re very happy to be a part of it.”

Beyond the sense of closeness, the couple agree that the landscape often serves as a gentle reminder to live in the moment.

“Most of the time in my life I feel like I’m driving 1,000 miles an hour and these giant rocks are cooling me down,” the actress notes.

MacArthur, who next appears opposite Jack Black in the holiday film Dear Santa Claus, he adds, “Mountains can stop you and slow you down—especially when you’re stuck in traffic because a herd of elk has blocked the road.”

Because the movie business was “at a standstill” at the time, Larter says, “We figured it was an opportunity to go on an adventure as a family. And we just started driving north.”

By 2022, they started building their dream house in Sun Valley, which they finished almost a year ago. The newly built property of 4,400 square meters is spread over two hectares of land.

While building the home, Larter knew she wanted to create something that “fits into the natural geography of Sun Valley but doesn’t have that traditional ‘cabin’ feel,” she says. “We wanted walls of glass that showcase and invite beautiful landscapes into the home.”

The actress was drawn to a neutral color palette to enhance the home’s natural light and bring warmth to the space, which is why they chose white oak wood paneling.

One of Larter’s favorite rooms is the kitchen, which features an Italian marble island with a waterfall. The space also offers a stunning view of the mountains, which Larter especially appreciates because it brings her whole family together for a meal.
