Alicia Silverstone Thinks Cher from Clueless Would Be an Eco-Friendly Shopper Today: 'She'd Be Down'

Alicia Silverstone believes that despite loving designers, unconscious Cher Horowitz would develop into an environmental style icon.

Speaking about shopping and sustainability during The Good Festival’s Sustainability Spotlights at Westfield Topanga in Canoga Park, Calif., on May 18, the actress revealed that she believes her famous character would happily move with the times, making environmentally conscious decisions about her shopping habits — if it would still be in shopping centers in 2024.

Asked how she thinks Cher would strike a balance between style and sustainability (remember that closet?!), Silverstone, 47, offered her opinion and even listed a few stores Cher would go to.

“I think Cher is very similar to having a child where she wants what she wants, but then she has such a big heart that she wants to do the right thing,” Silverstone said. “So she would [probably shop at] Real Real because she can bring all her fantastic designers there and she’d look great, but they’d be second-hand so she wouldn’t have to feel guilty about it.”

“I also feel she would love this handbag brand [called] Marcella … Maybe she wouldn’t choose Pact. I can see how she would say ‘That underwear is too boring’, but me [personally] I don’t care,” she joked.

“I think she’d like Mateo’s t-shirts, but it would just be a t-shirt and usually she wouldn’t want to wear a t-shirt unless it’s under a really cool jacket,” she told the audience before concluding, “pretty much, I think she would down.”

The 1995 film — written and directed by Amy Heckerling — has stood the test of time and remains an enjoyable re-watch for many.

Silverstone itself has been leaning towards nostalgia for the classics in recent years. In 2023, the actress donned Cher’s iconic yellow plaid suit again for a Rakuten Super Bowl commercial.

When she debuted on TikTok in 2021, Silverstone enlisted the help of her then 10-year-old son, Bear, who helped her re-enact a scene from the famous movie.

Before that, Silverstone marked the 27th anniversary of the film’s release in 2022 by sharing a video montage of her character on TikTok. “27 years ago a bad bitch was born 😉💁🏼‍♀️ Happy anniversary Cher! 💛 #Clueless #AsIf #90s,” Silverstone proudly captioned the video.

An advocate of clean living and eco-friendly shopping herself, Silverstone told the crowd at The Good Festival at Westfield Topanga that she learned to lead by example rather than preach to others about ways to shop that save the planet.

When it comes to pushing for the characters she plays to have the vegan lifestyle she’s adopted, for example, Silverstone admitted she’s ashamed “that it’s going to throw people off the character,” but she advocates for change wherever she can.

“What I do is, when I’m reading the scripts, if I see something where sometimes it’s going to say she’s making bacon and eggs for breakfast, I’ll say, ‘Hey, can we not do bacon and eggs for breakfast and try something else?’ ” she explained.

“I’ll talk to the props department and say not only that I don’t want the food I’m preparing on camera to be of animal origin, but I’ll also explain to them that it will be cheaper to buy vegan food for the props because when the restaurant scene happens, that food sits around all day and be kicked out,” she added. “So everywhere I can look for change.”
