Botha was threatened by a guy brandishing a knife on December 18, 1994, as she made her way back to her flat in Port Elizabeth after spending the night with her friends. She was then instructed to go to the next seat, and the attacker drove her car to get his accessory.
She was taken by the crooks to a wilderness area outside of town. It was Frans du Toit and Theuns Kruger who were the criminals. They tried to choke her after they had raped her first.
They also stabbed her 37 times in the stomach because Theuns wanted to take out her reproductive system. They then abandoned her, leaving her with numerous injuries. The perpetrators were found guilty and given a life sentence without the chance of release.
