Greece’s ATHENS on September 22. According to reports from the USOC press officer in Athens, the U.S. won TWO gold medals on day two thanks to impressive finishes in the final stages. After two days of competition, the United States’ medal total increased to four gold and three bronze thanks to Erin Popovich’s (Silverbow, Mont.) outstanding performances and those of three first-time Paralympians.

Popovich competed for what appeared to be a second-place finish against Chantel Wolfenden of Australia, the event’s four-year world record holder. However, Popovich outran Wolfenden and Kirsten Bruhn of Germany in the final 25 metres of the 100 S7 freestyle final to set a Paralympic record of 1.14.61 and win her second gold medal in as many nights.

In the 100 S8 freestyle two races later, Jessica Long (Dundalk, Maryland) displayed a forceful last metre kick. With 25 metres left, Long, the U.S. delegation’s youngest participant at age 12, fought past Israel’s Keren Or Leybovitch to set a new Paralympic record of 1.09.67.

When questioned about her Paralympic Gold victory, she said, “I’m just trying to catch my breath.”

Lantz Lamback (Augusta, Georgia) and Michael Prout (West Springfield, Massachusetts), two rookie Paralympians, adding two bronze medals to the team’s rookie momentum. With a timing of 1.05.02, Lamback finished third in the 100 S7 freestyle. Prout duplicated the feat in the 100 S9 freestyle in 59.72 seconds.

Curtis Lovejoy (Atlanta, Georgia), a seasoned gold medallist in both swimming and fencing at the Paralympics, will compete in the 100 S2 freestyle early on Tuesday. The 100 SB7 breaststroke will feature gold medalists from Athens Popovich and Rudy Garcia-Tolson (Riverside, California).
