All About Aaron Carter's Son, Prince

In addition to his musical legacy, Aaron Carter leaves behind his son Prince.

Musician, best known for his albums Aaron’s party and LOVEwas found dead on Nov. 5, 2022, at his home in Lancaster, California, PEOPLE has confirmed.

Carter, who is the younger brother of Backstreet Boys’ Nick Carter, shot to fame in 1997 with his self-titled debut album, followed by Aaron’s Party (Come and Get It), Oh, Aaron and Another earthquake!. Carter then turned to rap and released his fifth studio album, LOVE2018 — 16 years after his previous album.

Amidst his complicated ups and downs in the spotlight, including dealing with legal issues as well as struggles with addiction and mental health over the years, Carter became a father when his on-and-off fiancée Melanie Martin gave birth to a boy named Prince in November 2021.

“We’re doing well,” Martin told PEOPLE in September 2024 after dismissing Prince’s paternity rumors by getting a DNA test. “[We are] happy to have each other. He’s the best little boy and he’s really smart.”

He was born by emergency caesarean section

Prince was born on November 22, 2021, while Carter’s then-fiancée Martin underwent an emergency C-section after 13 hours of labor.

“Emergency C section after 13 hours of labor but my fiancé is in good health thank the lord and the incredibly sweet and kind staff here. Prince is precious I love you son. Your mom loves you as I cry tears on the phone. This is me cutting his umbilical cord ribbons my precious family #TheCarters @missmelaniemartin I’m so proud of you baby you made it I love you with all my heart my beautiful blessing from God,” Carter wrote on Instagram at the time.

Before welcoming Prince in 2021, Carter and Martin announced their pregnancy in April 2020 (and subsequent miscarriage in June 2020). At the time of the initial announcement, Carter expressed his excitement about becoming a father to PEOPLE.

“That’s what we both want,” said the musician about his future with Martin. “We’ve both been working on it. I’m just focused on the future and being a dad. I want to be a good dad. I’m focused, my music career is going really well, and touring, I have my clothing line out there, all these things that I have to myself, which are not necessarily just music, are the most important to me.”

The prince’s November 2021 birthday comes more than a year after the couple announced in a live YouTube broadcast in June 2020 that Martin had suffered a miscarriage, two months after they announced they were expecting their first child in April.

“She suffered a miscarriage due to stressful conditions,” Carter said on the live broadcast. “We’ll give her some time, let her heal and then we’ll try again. We both want that. I have to take care of her.”

It was named after Michael Jackson

Carter’s son’s full name is Prince Lyric Carter, which the singer revealed to TMZ is a tribute to Michael Jackson, who was known as the Prince of Pop. The two first met when Carter was 14 and developed a close friendship after Carter performed “I Want Candy” at Jackson’s anniversary celebration at Madison Square Garden.

Aaron and Melanie vowed that Prince would be their “priority” after the split

A week after Prince’s birth, Carter announced he was separating from Martin, citing “personal reasons.”[s].”

Despite their public split, the singer promised that his son would be their priority. “Mel and I appreciate the support and care we’ve been shown,” Carter wrote at the time. “Prince will continue to be our priority at this difficult time… please be respectful as we transition and manage this unfortunate situation. #HeartBroken.”

The on-again, off-again couple reunited in December 2021, before breaking up again in February 2022. The status of their relationship at the time of Carter’s death is unclear.

In September 2022, Carter said Sun that he voluntarily attended an outpatient rehab program to stabilize his relationship with Martin and regain custody of their son, reporting that Martin’s mother had been granted temporary custody of their son due to domestic violence and drug use concerns.

A month before his death, Carter also listed his home in Lancaster, California to begin a “new chapter.” At the time, he explained on Twitter: “Selling my second home. Real estate has been super good to me. Ready for a new chapter in my third home that I plan to stay in to give my family a nice life.”
