All About Anna 'Chickadee' Cardwell's Husband Eldridge Toney, Who She Wed Before Her Death

Anna “Chickadee” Cardwell was in a long-term relationship with her husband Eldridge Toney before she died in December 2023.

The Here comes Honey Boo Boo star first started dating Toney in 2017, following her divorce from Michael Cardwell, with whom she shares one daughter, Kylee. She also had another daughter, Kaitlyn, from a previous relationship. She and Toney quietly married in March 2023.

Cardwell died on Dec. 9, 2023, after being diagnosed with stage four adrenal cancer in January, her mom, mom June Shannon, announced in an Instagram post. She was 29 years old.

“It is with broken hearts that we announce that @annamarie35 is no longer with us,” Shannon wrote. “She passed away peacefully in my home last night on 23.12. She gave a hellish fight for 10 months, she died with her family around her, she won’t, and we will [sic] update you with more information as we get it today.”

She was surrounded by her sisters – Jessica “Chubbs” Shannon, Lauryn “Pumpkin” Efird and Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Thompson – as well as her husband when she died.

According to Cardwell’s Facebook, she and Toney began dating in June 2017. She was previously married to Michael Cardwell from 2015 to 2017, and the two have a daughter, Kylee, together.

Toney grew up in Wrens, Georgia and graduated from Baldwin High School, according to his Facebook page.

They moved into the home together in 2020

In March 2020, Cardwell shared with The Sun of the USA that she and Toney were moving into a double trailer on a lake in Milledgeville, Georgia together. They previously lived in a small trailer in Gordon, Georgia.

“Eldridge is great with the girls and we wanted a bigger home to raise our family in. We fell in love with that lakefront property,” Cardwell told the outlet. “It’s like a dream come true. I can’t wait to unpack and decorate and make it my own.”

Before she was diagnosed with cancer, Cardwell had hoped to have a child with Toney. However, the two experienced multiple miscarriages in 2021, she told The USA Sun in June of that year.

“We are trying to have a third child and it has been difficult. I went through four miscarriages and a D&C,” she said. “It’s been a long bumpy road for us trying to have baby number three.”

The reality star added that she miscarried just before Christmas 2020, and was later informed by doctors that she did not “produce enough progesterone,” which affected her pregnancy.

Regardless, the couple planned to keep trying.

They got married after she found out about her cancer diagnosis

Following her death, PEOPLE confirmed that Cardwell made her relationship with Toney permanent shortly after learning she had cancer. Cardwell married Toney on March 4, 2023, in Wilkinson County, Georgia, according to a copy of the marriage license obtained by PEOPLE.

In his interview for The USA Sunshe told the newspaper that the two of them were already thinking about marriage then.

“We’ve been together almost four years this month or next,” she said. “It’s a hassle to deal with him and a hassle to deal with me. He wants to marry me, but after my first marriage I don’t want to get married anymore, because you never know what will happen. I always tell him that marriage is just a piece of paper that says ‘Hey, you’re married’. ”

She added that the two had promised each other rings and that if four years passed, she would be more open to the idea of ​​marriage.

He was by her side while she was being treated for cancer

Cardwell found a support system in Toney after she was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer. In May, Cardwell posted a picture of Toney next to her as she received chemotherapy, writing: “Okay, let’s go to the third round of chemo. this yesterday was a pretty good day but it got a little bit and Cracker Barrel was good going down but not up.”

Even before her diagnosis, Toney was always supportive of Cardwell.

“He deals with a lot of my things, he helps me because I have very strong anxiety and a little depression here and there, but, you know, I’ve had worse,” she told The USA Sun. “It’s not as bad as it was and he helps me through all these things and makes sure I’m okay. It’s like he’s always asking me: ‘How are you today? are you ok?’ ”

She added that her family approves of him, and mom June jokingly asked him how he puts up with her.

“Our relationship has been good and the family really loves him,” she said. “Mom would ask him ‘how did you deal with her for four years?’ And he will say ‘It’s not always easy, but I deal with it’. ”

He was close to her children

While the girls continued their relationship with Cardwell’s ex-husband Michael, Toney also stepped in as a father figure. Cardwell often posted pictures of herself fooling around with her daughters.

He was also present when Kaitlyn graduated elementary school in May 2023 and Kylee moved on to second grade, according to Cardwell’s Facebook.

In September 2024, Shannon was granted custody of Kaitlyn after a family therapist testified that she “expressed a desire to remain” with her grandmother.
