Tez and Bo had an instant connection from when they were teammates, and it continued when they became brothers after Bo’s family took in Tez. While they were teammates at Pinson Valley High School, Bo quickly noticed Tez’s big heart and football skills. Patrick, who was the coach of the school team, knew about Tez’s problems and had the idea for Tez to come to the Nix family.
“It was a struggle, it was just coming. Like, at one point we didn’t have beds, we didn’t know where the next meal was coming from. Growing up in a crazy environment, you see violence every day,” Tez told the Pac-12 Network. “Things weren’t going well at home … but my coach, Patrick Nix, said [to Tez’s mom]’What if I take him home for a few days with us. Whenever it suits him, he can come back.’ ”
Tez said that it was new to him as soon as he entered the house and saw the family sitting at the table and he did not want to leave. Tez’s mother gave him her blessing to live with the Nix family and is delighted with the success her son has achieved.
“My child got to live a dream and a life that I couldn’t give him,” said Shamika Johnson Oregonian. “If I had kept him here with me, I don’t believe he would have finished high school, let alone gone to college… I think what I did for my child… saved his life.”
