All About Ella Emhoff, Kamala Harris' Fashion Model Stepdaughter

Ella Emhoff thrives in the fashion industry, both on and off the runway.

While her father, Douglas Emhoff, is a lawyer and her stepmother, Kamala Harris, is the 49th Vice President of the United States, Emhoff initially avoided politics and embraced her fashion profile as a model, artist and designer.

She first gained attention in the style world when she wore a bejeweled Miu Miu coat to the presidential inauguration in January 2021. Since then, Emhoff signed a major modeling contract, graced famous catwalks and won the covers of prestigious magazines.

Almost a year after stepping onto the tailoring scene professionally, she has established herself as a style “icon” thanks to her eccentric style and comfort in her own body. Furthermore, she gained attention as a designer with her wacky knitted creations.

Now, Emhoff has been vocal about her support for her stepmother’s 2024 presidential run.

She is a member of the second family of the United States

Emhoff was born to America’s second Mr. Doug Emhoff and film producer Kerstin Emhoff on May 29, 1999. After her parents divorced in 2008, her father married Harris in 2014.

Harris was the Attorney General of California at the time. When Harris became US Vice President, Emhoff became an official member of the Second Family of the United States.

She was a model and walked catwalks for major fashion brands

After catching the eye of fashion-forward spectators at the January 2021 presidential inauguration, Emhoff signed with IMG Models Worldwide later that month. Emhoff joined the agency’s A-list, which includes Gigi Hadid, Bella Hadid and Hailey Baldwin.

Since signing, she has modeled for brands such as Balenciaga, posed for renowned fashion magazines such as Vanity Fairand participated in fashion shows for Miu Miu, Proenza and others.

In September 2021, she became the face of the Adidas by Stella McCartney campaign in tandem with the designer’s Adidas Earth Explorer collection. “I feel like Stella McCartney represents the future of fashion,” said Emhoff Vogue cooperation.

Before becoming the face of Adidas by Stella McCartney, Emhoff wore the designer when she debuted at the Met Gala in May 2021.

She graced the famous steps of the Met in an Adidas by Stella McCartney red diamond mesh bodysuit with matching trousers, walking hand-in-hand with actress Julia Garner on the red carpet.

She is a fashion designer herself

Not only has Emhoff worked with some of the biggest fashion designers in the industry, but she is a fashion designer herself! The creative attended the prestigious Parsons School of Design in New York and graduated in May 2021.

Harris posted a celebratory tribute to her stepdaughter on the page Twitter writing: “Congratulations to our daughter Ella on her graduation. So proud of you. Keep dreaming with ambition and there’s nothing you can’t achieve.” The post was concluded with “Love, Momala”.

Emhoff studied fine arts with a concentrated focus on clothing and textiles. In spring 2021, she launched a limited collection of knitwear, with Batsheva Hay, and said Vanity Fair there are designs for a collection of the same name at some point.

In January 2022, Emhoff announced on Instagram that she was continuing to produce knitwear under her own name. She shared that her first “knit fall,” which included 20 pieces of handmade items, would be available later that year on her website.

“I’m a one-woman show,” Emhoff said Women’s daily wear in 2022. “It was an extreme labor of love.”

Since then, Emhoff’s designs have grown in popularity. In February 2023. Vogue reported that her knitwear will be featured in a special pop-up presentation at New York Fashion Week. Two months later, Emhoff’s designs were featured on the cover MINI V.

She was declared ‘icon of the year’ Harper’s Bazaar

Harper’s Bazaar They named Emhoff one of their “icons” of the year for her impact on the world through her ideas and art. She spoke to PEOPLE at 2022 Harper’s Bazaar Icons and Bloomingdale’s 150th Anniversary on that honor.

“It’s kind of shocking,” she said. “This is an incredible honor and as someone who doesn’t think of myself that way, it’s a nice reassurance. And it makes me check myself and the way I perceive myself, it’s so exciting.”

She embraces her natural beauty

Emhoff has established herself as a trailblazer in the fashion industry thanks to her low-maintenance beauty routine, in addition to being an advocate for embracing natural beauty.

“When I was younger I used to pluck the center of my brows, but I recently stopped and it’s amazing,” she said in a video for Good morning Vogue as she prepared for Balenciaga’s Spring/Summer 2022 show at Paris Fashion Week. “I think everyone should just embrace their little eyebrows.”

Setting a new extraordinary standard, the model also does not cover her tattoos or shave her armpits. In September 2021, she especially walked the runway at Prabal Gurung’s show at New York Fashion Week in a bare skin edition.

In August 2021, Emhoff confirmed her relationship with GQ editor Sam Hine during an interview with Vanity Fair. Although the couple appeared on numerous red carpets and fashion events, the model describes the perfect match as “standing at the market, buying the craziest foods and figuring out what to cook with them.”

Hine is also very supportive of Emhoff, her career and her philosophy. “She works alone and that’s the message,” Hine told PEOPLE on Harper’s Bazaar party. “She’s a real person. And that’s the most important thing. That’s what being an icon really is.”

She is endorsing Harris’ 2024 presidential run

Ever since Harris announced her candidacy for the 2024 presidential race, Emhoff has been supporting her stepmother. She was prominently featured at the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, where she was seen wearing a Harris-Walz baseball cap on the first day and “Doug” on the second.

She was also quick to defend Harris against her political opponents. In July 2024, when Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance’s Fox News interview in which he criticized Harris for being “childless” resurfaced, Emhoff took to social media.

“How can you be ‘childless’ when you have cute kids like Cole and me,” Emhoff wrote on her Instagram stories. – I love my three parents.
