All About Emma Chamberlain’s Parents, Michael and Sophia Chamberlain

Emma Chamberlain’s parents are a big part of her life.

The YouTuber and mogul was born on May 22, 2001 to parents Michael and Sophia Chamberlain. Although they divorced when she was a child and had no more children together, Emma says she is grateful for her family dynamic.

“I’m really happy that my parents have always been non-traditional parents,” she said in a 2022 interview on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast. “They are very much like siblings. Maybe because they didn’t consider themselves to be that type of parent at all. And so they had me because they wanted to, but they said, ‘We don’t fit the parenting mold, so we’ll just do it our way.’ And it was great.”

Michael and Sophia supported Emma when she dropped out of high school to pursue her rising career as a YouTuber and frequently appeared in her content. She founded the coffee company Chamberlain Coffee, hosted her own podcast “Anything Goes” and modeled for major brands and publications.

Here’s what you need to know about Emma Chamberlain’s parents, including their past financial struggles and the career advice they gave their daughter.

It is not known exactly when Emma’s parents got married, but they divorced when she was five years old. In her 2022 Call her dad interview, the star said their split “wasn’t actually a super bad experience.”

“It was, number one, what was best for them and for their happiness. Number two, I’ve never seen them fight, I’ve never seen them fight,” she explained. “They divorced before it could have become traumatizing for me and that’s really mature. And they are still friends, they talk all the time. In that way, I’m really lucky, they get along great. And they are so supportive of each other.”

One downside of her parents’ divorce, Emma continued, was that she didn’t have a romantic relationship to look up to growing up.

“[It] it gets a little unnerving when you’re older and you’re like, ‘I’m in my first relationship, what’s this supposed to look like?’ I don’t know, I’ve never seen it,” she said.

He shares his work and creative process on YouTube and Instagram. He mainly does oil paintings, usually depicting landscapes or seascapes.

Using his experience with the platform, Michael helped Emma launch her YouTube channel. He was the cameraman behind many of her videos and helped her take photos for Instagram.

Michael also often travels with his daughter. In 2021, he accompanied Emma to the Louis Vuitton Spring/Summer 2022 womenswear show as part of Paris Fashion Week.

When Emma’s channel started to grow rapidly, Michael said he gave her advice on how to deal with the influx of attention.

“When you’re talking to the camera, remember you’re talking to one person,” he recalled to Business Insider. “It makes it more personal and less burdensome when it comes to sheer volume.”

He also told his daughter that “haters” are inevitable and not to pay too much attention to them. “It’s just part of the deal,” he said.

Given her eventual success, fans might assume that Emma comes from wealth, but the “Anything Goes” host opened up about her lower-middle-class upbringing.

In her 2022 “Call Her Daddy” interview, Emma said that despite the affluent reputation of her hometown of San Francisco, her family faced financial difficulties.

“A lot of people assume that if you live there, you’re rich, but that wasn’t the case for me and my family at all,” she explained. “My dad is an artist, so we fell more on the lower middle class side, which was difficult.”

Emma also said her family shared a one-bedroom flat while her friends at school “lived in these huge mansions”.

“There were times when we couldn’t even go to the cinema, when I was a child, because there wasn’t enough money,” she told Forbes in 2018.

She continued: “And my dad is an artist, he got sick for a while and couldn’t paint, so there were hard times for our family. And now he’s doing great. But at times it was strange not having money. I’ve always been the one struggling financially, so now it’s so cool that I can make my own money and do whatever I want with it.”

Emma attributes her close relationship with her parents to the fact that she is an only child.

“I think it could have been a lot of fun to have a sibling, but I loved the friendship that I was able to develop with my parents and the closeness that I don’t think I would have had if I had a sibling,” she said on Call Her Dad ” in 2022.

In the interview, Emma described her unique relationships with each of her parents.

“My dad is very outgoing and creative, but also very wise,” she said of Michael. “[I’ll say], ‘Dad, this boy is the love of my life,’ and he said, ‘That’s the worst guy I’ve ever met.’ He will tell me what he thinks. But he also gives me the freedom to make mistakes. And he never judges me.”

Sophia, she said, “is like one of the girls.”

“She is very nice. I tell her everything. And I have no hesitation,” Emma said. “Like, she knows everything I’ve done in my whole life. So I’m very, very close to her.”

Emma also described their relationship as “more like sisters”.

“We often clashed when I was growing up,” she said. “Even when we fight like literal sisters, she’s always there.”

Emma started her YouTube channel as a creative outlet during high school. She was having a hard time with her classmates, and her dad suggested she start a project outside of school that she could get excited about. She decided to start her own channel and quickly succeeded, amassing 8 million followers in just two years.

In her first year, Emma dropped out of school to pursue YouTube and soon moved to Los Angeles, both decisions supported by her parents.

I just want her to be healthy and happy, Michael said The New York Times in 2019. “Her mom and I are not dance parents. My feeling, and I tell her this often, is that you can walk away from this at any time. If it’s not good for you and it’s not healthy for you, it’s not worth it.”

In the wake of their daughter’s success, Michael and Sophia saw their own lives change drastically. In an interview with Business Insider in 2019, Michael said that there are certain public places that he and Emma can no longer go to because she is full of fans, but that it comes with the territory.

“What are you even going to do?” He said. “To be honest, most people are very respectful. They often just want to take pictures.”

Sophia said she was shocked when fans other than her daughter started approaching her.

“Honestly, I had no perspective on YouTube or popular YouTubers until I took her to Playlist Live [in 2018] and I said, ‘Shit,'” she said in a 2019 interview The New York Times. “‘My life will never be the same. This is crazy.’ Because I didn’t know how popular she was. I’d just go to a little Marriott store and have some cool brew coffee and fans wanted to take pictures with me and I was like, ‘How do you even know who I am?’ ”

Emma’s mom is also affected by the dark side of fame. “It breaks me to pieces when I see the reaction because her hair and makeup are like this or that,” she told The New York Times. “That’s what worries me. It saddens her and hurts her feelings like any human being. Now it’s not just two girls in high school, we’re talking about thousands of people on social media.”
