All About Halsey’s Parents, Chris and Nicole Frangipane

Throughout Halsey’s career, her parents, Chris and Nicole Frangipane, have been a constant.

The “Without Me” singer, who was born Ashley Nicolette Frangipane and uses the pronouns she/they, grew up in New Jersey with her parents. Chris and Nicole dropped out of college after becoming pregnant with Halsey in 1994. They later had two more children, Halsey’s younger brothers Sévian and Dante.

The Grammy-nominated artist described her childhood as tumultuous but full of love. At 19, Halsey was kicked out of the house after dropping out of college and later reconnected with them after signing a record deal.

“Families go through cycles, and my father and I have a really great relationship right now,” Halsey said in an interview with Zane Lowe in January 2020.

Halsey has taken Chris and Nicole to various red carpet events over the years and praised them on social media. In 2020, Halsey shared photos and a video of Nicole on Instagram with the caption, “Happy Mother’s Day to my best friend. 🌼.”

Chris and Nicole became parents at a young age

Chris and Nicole were in college when they found out they were pregnant with Halsey. In an interview with Rolling stone in June 2019, the singer revealed that she lived in their parents’ dorm for the first few years before the couple dropped out of school and started working to support their family.

Chris was a car dealership manager while Nicole worked as a hospital security guard – and sometimes they worked two jobs. Because of this, the family moved often. “My parents moved to where the jobs were,” Halsey said Marie Claire in July 2018

Halsey spoke with Glamour in January 2019 about attending a new school almost every year until the age of 13. “I didn’t have many friends,” they said.

Halsey’s father is black and her mother is white. The singer spoke openly about the experience of white race and “white passage”, saying that she “accepted it about herself”.

“I’m proud to be in a biracial family, I’m proud of who I am,” Halsey said Playboy in September 2017. “I look white, but I don’t feel like one. I’m black. So it was weird navigating that.”

Halsey spoke to Vulture in June of that year about the microaggressions they experienced as a family.

“When I was little, if somebody would see me and my dad walking through, like, a grocery store parking lot, women would come up to us and say, ‘Honey, are you okay?’ – the singer recalled. “Because they saw a little white girl walking with a black man.”

“I grew up in a really chaotic household,” Halsey said Rolling stone in July 2016. “There was always s— throwing.”

At age 17, Halsey was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, a condition her mother also has. The singer told Marie Claire that because of this their childhood was somewhat unpredictable. They recalled, “We would ask, ‘What’s for dinner?’ AND [my mom would] be like, ‘Ice cream and rollerblading.’ We’d go to the ice rink and have ice cream for dinner.”

“If I had normal parents and crazy things started happening to me … I’d probably be like, ‘I’m a freak.’ But because I watched my mom do it, it was normal to me,” Halsey said.

Chris and Nicole have a strong relationship with Halsey

Before she became a Grammy-nominated singer, Halsey was a homeless teenager living on the streets of New York. After graduating from Warren Hills Regional High School in Washington, New Jersey, she was accepted to the Rhode Island School of Design.

Unfortunately, when Halsey found she couldn’t afford the tuition, she withdrew her enrollment and instead took classes at a community college before dropping out. Because of this, Halsey’s parents kicked her out of the house, and the singer moved to the Big Apple with their boyfriend at the time, where they began to improve their musical skills.

“They just didn’t agree with a lot of things about me,” Halsey said Rolling stone in 2016.

In a 2017 interview with Vulture, Halsey explained that she hadn’t spoken to their parents in over a year when she called to tell them she’d landed a record deal, and Chris immediately flew to Los Angeles.

Halsey, Chris and Nicole developed a strong bond despite the difficult situation. In September 2020, the singer congratulated their dad on his birthday on Instagram. “I love you and you are the most charming, intelligent, kindest guy I know,” Halsey wrote.

“My parents were great about not knowing we were poor,” Halsey said Guard in February 2020, explaining how Chris and Nicole made sacrifices to encourage her creativity.

“They got me a used violin and put it on a payment plan. I changed my mind and wanted a viola – they got me a viola,” added the singer. “I’d get art supplies every holiday. I’d destroy the carpets and the walls. They’d lose the security deposit. All because I wanted to paint my bedroom.”

Halsey recalled that Chris thought her ambitions were impractical, but Nicole talked him into coming. In an interview with Glamour in 2019, Halsey recalled hearing Nicole tell Chris, “‘We can’t keep her. We don’t know what she can become.’ ”

The singer also told how their father had an excellent memory while working as a salesman and always remembered small details about people he hadn’t seen in years.

Chris was Halsey’s companion at the 2017 Grammy Awards.

In October 2019, the singer recalled the award ceremony in an interview with Rolling stone.

“The best thing for me was that I brought my dad,” they told the outlet. “My dad is a huge Metallica fan, and we were sitting in front of Metallica, so he was trying not to turn around the whole show, looking over his shoulder.”
